Shawn Poindexter to Arizona: Wildcats land big time size at wide receiver

This was a pleasant surprise

The Arizona Wildcats had a surprise commitment on Tuesday, with a huge in-state junior college wide receiver in Shawn Poindexter. He checks in at 6-7 215lbs out of Glendale Community College, ranked 49th among all junior college receivers; a 2-star prospect.

He came from Centennial High School (Peoria, AZ) and I had to do quite a bit of digging for his MaxPreps profile, which says he played football, basketball and volleyball for the Coyotes. During his senior year, he had 21 catches for 398 yards and seven touchdowns, leading his team to a 12-2 record, losing to Ironwood Ridge in the Division II Arizona State Championship.

He had ended up signing with Cal Baptist to play volleyball, but never enrolled, sitting out two years before heading to Glendale for football this past spring. The bad part about his volleyball endeavors is that it caused some eligibility issues, where he'll now only have two years to play two years, but will be appealing to try and get four years to play three. At Glendale this past season, he finished with 47 receptions for 727 yards and seven touchdowns, all ranked top five in the nation.

The odd thing about Poindexter's commitment was the timing of it. He had offers to South Dakota State and UAB but took a visit to Marshall this past weekend and committed on Monday. Tuesday came around, the Arizona coaching staff called him, and he committed just like that.

This is some much-needed size that Arizona landed here. Not only is he closer to seven feet tall than he is six, but Arizona had no size at the position when you look at the projected depth chart down the road. Once Trey Griffey exhausts his eligibility, Abraham Mendivil would have been the tallest receiver on the team, listed at 6-1. We'll see what Poindexter can contribute and how his appeal for more eligibility goes, but for now, this is a big get for the staff, addressing a huge area of need.
