Troy Young to Arizona: 3-star athlete signs with Wildcats
Arizona went all the way to Alabama for some help in the secondary.
The Arizona Wildcats need help in the secondary. That position group struggled last year, but will be getting help from Troy Young and four other safeties committed in the 2017 class. Young is from Mobile, Alabama and attended Mobile Christian School. Arizona offered him on May 10th of last year and he committed on July 23rd.
Young holds offers from Mississippi State, NC State, South Carolina, and Central Florida among others, so it was somewhat surprising when he committed to Arizona in July. While he flirted with UAB before signing day, he ended up signing and I think he’s a steal. He’s ranked as the 138th best safety in the nation and is a three-star prospect.
Young is coming in on defense, but he had a pretty prolific career as a running back in Alabama. He ran for 2,589 yards and tacked on 380 receiving yards in his junior and senior years at Mobile Christian. That resulted in 36 rushing TDs and 5 receiving TDs. I couldn’t find accurate stats for his senior year on defense, but his junior year he had 83 tackles and three interceptions.
His coach had some good things to say about him in this al.com article on his commitment.
"To me, Troy's greatest attribute is if you ask him to do any task, he tries so hard to do exactly what you tell him," head coach Ronnie Cottrell said. "He is a tremendous worker in the offseason. He's in great condition. He loves the weight room. I think he would be a good fit in any college system because of his work ethic.
"On the field, he obviously makes big plays. He can take it the distance at any time on offense and, from the safety position, he has the ability to track the ball. Troy Young is a guy you dream about coaching."
Young also had this to say in the article about his decision.
"I felt like Arizona was the right fit for me," he said. "Even though I haven't been to campus yet, the coaches made it seem like I could play pretty early in my career and fit in well with the team. I feel like I can be at home there."
He’s coming in as a safety, but I could see him taking on a Tellas Jones role at the next level. Either way, Arizona got a great athlete out of Alabama and he should be able to provide depth right away.
