Scott Young to Arizona: Three-star safety signs with Wildcats

Arizona lands a standout playmaker from San Diego

The Arizona Wildcats have landed one of the top prospects in San Diego, signing three-star safety Scott Young out of Helix High School, a do-it-all playmaker for the Scotties.

The 6-foot, 190 pound safety is ranked No. 800 overall, 59 among his position group. He held offers to Colorado and Washington State, with Colorado State and San Diego State still recruiting him all throughout his senior year.

The four-year varsity starter was a two-way standout, earning East County Player of the Year and All-CIF First Team Defense honors as a senior. One of San Diego’s top trainers and former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia has compared him to Heisman finalist Jabrill Peppers.

In his senior campaign, Young hauled in 68 catches for 1,046 yards and ten touchdowns. He also added five carries for 77 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Defensive stats were not recorded on Maxpreps with the exception of a fumble recovery.

The new defensive staff has loaded up on safeties in the 2016 and 2017 classes, with Young coming in as a slot corner or spur safety. The secondary will be crowded, but I think Young can come in and earn some immediate playing time as a true freshman and become a Will Parks type player at Arizona.
