Jose Ramirez to Arizona: Three-star linebacker signs with the Wildcats

Ramirez is already enrolled at the U of A

The Arizona Wildcats received an early Christmas present when Auburndale Senior (Auburndale, FL) linebacker Jose Ramirez committed on Christmas Eve. The 6-foot-3, 195 pound backer flipped his commitment from South Alabama to the ‘Cats after Arizona offered him earlier that week.

Ramirez had this to say about his commitment when I talked to him a few days after Christmas.

“Arizona is a better opportunity for me. The Pac-12 fits my playing style. They (Arizona) need me to drop back and cover guys, especially since the Pac-12 is pass happy. I also like that this is the staff’s first recruiting class. They made me feel like Arizona is home.”

Of note, Ramirez graduated early and enrolled at Arizona in early January, but that’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is that Ramirez had never set foot in Tucson before enrolling. After a week or so, I asked him what he thought of the Old Pueblo. He stated that he liked it but had to get used to it.

Looking at Ramirez’s film, he has great speed and vision of the field. He is a sideline-to-sideline player, and it is easy to see why Arizona’s staff wants him to drop back in coverage. Another roll he will play is as an edge rusher. He adds much needed depth for a depleted Wildcat linebacker corps.

Ramirez racked up 114 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 0.5 sack, a PBU, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and a blocked punt during his senior campaign. He racked up 148 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 1 PBU 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in three seasons at Auburndale.

Since Ramirez is on campus and taking classes, he will be able to take part in Arizona’s upcoming spring practice.
