Tony Fields to Arizona: Three-star athlete signs with Wildcats, already on campus
Paul Magloire 2.0, maybe?
In an effort to corner the market on top recruits named “Tony,” the Arizona Wildcats signed (and already enrolled!) three-star athlete Tony Fields, a versatile safety/linebacker combo from Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fields turned down offers from Illinois, San Diego State, Missouri, Oregon State, and Washington State among others to join the Wildcats. Fields graduated early so he could participate in spring practice and be ready for the fall.
As Gabe pointed out when he originally committed, Fields is built in the same mold as Paul Magloire. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Fields’ build is almost identical to Magloire’s, and like Magloire, he fits the hybrid linebacker/safety mold that defenses are using with increasing frequency.
Fields was extremely productive his senior year, racking up 73 tackles, 3 sacks, and an interception. More importantly though, he shined when it counted the most: in the state championship game against Spring Creek. Fields came up with a critical fourth down stop on the one-yard line to give Desert Pines the ball back late in the first half. On the offensive side of the ball, Fields caught two touchdowns and had almost 150 yards receiving. His big performance helped Desert Pines win the state championship.
With Fields already enrolled, he’ll participate in spring practice and be ahead of the curve come fall. Here’s hoping that he’ll have the opportunity to come up big in some important games for the Wildcats next season.
