Brian Casteel to Arizona: Three-star receiver signs with Wildcats

A true freshman that is likely to see the field next season

Brian Casteel might be one of the best kept secrets for the Arizona Wildcats in this recruiting class. While much of Arizona’s class was picked apart late in the cycle, Casteel is arguably one of the most consistent and well-polished products of this class.

The three-star wide receiver hails from Charter Oak High School (Covina, CA), was recruited by Miguel Reveles, and served as the do-it-all guy for the Chargers. Casteel has been an extremely productive receiver for the past three years on varsity.

Debuting as a sophomore, he had exploded onto the scene with 65 receptions for 1,279 yards and 11 touchdowns. Junior year saw a dip in production with 57 receptions for 913 yards and nine touchdowns.

As a senior, Casteel expanded his role on the team, carrying the ball 102 times for 644 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding 51 receptions for 766 yards and eight touchdowns through the air. He also played defensive back, accumulating 72 tackles, three interceptions, and two sacks.

His offer list included Colorado State, Nevada, San Jose State, and Washington State, but he also heard quite a bit from Arizona State, California, Notre Dame, Washington, and UCLA throughout his process.

There is a pretty good chance that Casteel can see some playing time as a freshman. He looks to be a more polished receiver than some of Arizona’s previous incoming freshmen, and has the versatility to play outside or in the slot at 6-foot, 190 pounds.

While the slot might be crowded with Shun Brown, DeVaughn Cooper, and Tyrell Johnson, the outside has some work to do with Zach Benjamin, Cam Denson, Shawn Poindexter, and Cedric Peterson — all guys who have little to no Pac-12 experience at receiver.
