Arizona basketball: How to watch exhibition vs. College of Idaho

Games against another team start Tuesday night

So far, we have only seen the 2016-17 Arizona Wildcats play against themselves, but on Tuesday night, games against other opponents begin.

Arizona will play its first of two exhibition games in McKale Center against the College of Idaho Coyotes. The game will be broadcast live, so if you are unable to attend the game, you’ll still be able to watch it.

Here’s how to do that:

Time

7:30 PM PT

TV

Pac-12 Networks

Streaming

Pac-12.com/live or on the Pac-12 Now app on iOS or Android

College of Idaho has already played two games this season, going 1-1 and losing the Championship Game of the Aramark Quinn Classic to Bethesda 97-83. They won their opener 75-53 against Trinity Western.

The Coyotes are actually the top-ranked team in their division in the NAIA preseason poll, so this game is a big deal for a team that is seeking out some big-time success the rest of the year. It won’t be a close game, but at least it’s a team that has already played games and is one of the best at their level.

Arizona basketball: Allonzo Trier’s status for exhibition game unclear

A very strong no comment from Sean Miller this time around

As the Arizona Wildcats prepare for their first exhibition game on Tuesday night, the status of sophomore guard Allonzo Trier still remains unclear.

With rumors about a possible season-long suspension looming, head coach Sean Miller was once again asked about Trier’s status by the Daily Star’s Bruce Pascoe, and gave the following:

When pressed on it again, to try and explain to the fans what to expect on Tuesday, Miller went the route of deciding to be a bit more combative about it.

“I was taught a long time ago when I was four years old...no doesn’t mean maybe. Maybe that’s just Beaver County, Pennsylvania, but no doesn’t mean maybe. No doesn’t mean maybe.”

Miller also would not say who was starting on Tuesday, though he did say Arizona will start the five players they would start if the game counted toward the overall record.

Also of note, Miller would not comment on the basketball program’s relationship with the Harvey Mason Jr. family when asked about Trey Mason’s decision to not be on the team this season. Trey is still enrolled at the University of Arizona. Trey’s sister Mia is still listed on the school’s Beach Volleyball roster.

Arizona is set to tip off against the College of Idaho Coyotes Tuesday night at 7:30 PM PT. The Coyotes were in McKale prior to Miller’s press conference on Monday.

Arizona football: Kick time vs. Colorado set for 8 PM

Late nights with the Cats

Since the Arizona Wildcats aren’t exactly primetime material this year, fans of the team are forced to stay up until essentially the next morning to watch this team play.

Next week’s home game against the Colorado Buffaloes will start at 8 PM local time.

With Arizona not observing daylight savings time this weekend, this game actually starts at 7 PM PT, 8 PM MT.

Last weekend’s game vs. Stanford, which was also broadcast on Fox Sports 1, ended right around 11:25 PM PT thanks to plenty of running plays in the fourth quarter of a blowout game. The second half did not start until exactly 10 PM, which is a joke.

I don’t imagine there will be a lot of people at this game, which will once again shine a negative light on the current state of affairs with Arizona football.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona women’s soccer wins in Double OT on Senior Day

Nice way to finish the home season

The Arizona women’s soccer team hasn’t been doing as great as last year’s NCAA Tournament team, but on Sunday, they closed out the home schedule with a bang. In double OT against Cal, on Senior Day, it was junior Cali Crisler who found herself in the right spot to put the ball in the back of the net and end the game, giving Arizona a 2-1 victory. “It wasn’t the prettiest goal,” Crisler said to Ryan Kelapire afterwards, “but I knew I had to get my body on it someway to deflect it in.”

Arizona vs. Washington State: A first look at the Cougars

What will the Wildcats face in Pullman this week?

After Saturday night’s loss to the Stanford Cardinal, the Arizona Wildcats will travel to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars this week. The Cougars are coming off a nail-biting win at Oregon State that has extended their winning streak to six games. They will look to keep it rolling against UA.

WSU 2016 Record – 6-2 (5-0 Pac-12)

Key Games – Week one loss vs. Eastern Washington (45-42), Week two loss at Boise State (31-28), Week five win vs. Oregon (51-33), Week six win at Stanford (42-16), Week eight win at ASU (37-32)

Key Offensive Players – Luke Falk (QB), River Cracraft (WR), Gabe Marks (WR), Jamal Morrow (RB), Riley Sorenson (Center), Cole Madison (OT)

Key Defensive Players – Hercules Mata’afa (DE), Peyton Pelluer (LB), Shalom Luani (FS), Parker Henry (CB)

Washington State is one of the hottest teams in the country right now and it’s amazing how Mike Leach has been able to rally his team after the start they had. The Cougars started the year 0-2, which includes a horrendous loss in the season-opener against FCS opponent Eastern Washington. The Cougs have since won six-straight games and became bowl eligible Saturday night.

We saw a very similar situation last season when the Cougars lost to an FCS school at home to open the season. They went on to win nine of their next 12 games and finished with a 6-3 Pac-12 record. The regular season ended with an ugly loss in the Apple Cup to their rival Washington. This season, that rematch could decide the North and very possibly the Pac-12 champion.

An interesting fact about the Cougars/Wildcats series is the road team has won the last three games. You probably remember last season’s exciting 45-42 WSU win in Tucson. Well, the Cougars’ offense will look almost identical to that. Luke Falk is having another stat-stuffing season which results in River Cracraft and Gabe Marks as the beneficiaries.

The defense will give up points, but it can be dangerous if the game turns into a shoot out. The Wildcats are not currently equipped to handle that style of play. This would be the best case scenario for WSU, and honestly, it’s also the most likely scenario.

It was great to see Brandon Dawkins behind center again, and it was a positive sign that Anu Solomon finally dressed. Solomon even saw some limited action, but his rust is awfully apparent. The good news is these two are back and the Stanford game is over. Rich Rodriguez now has a week to get the offense ready for an average WSU defense.

As for the defense, their biggest hope is that the offense will be able to register some extended drives and score some points. Saturday will be a daunting task for this Arizona defense as the Cougars’ have one of the most potent offenses in the FBS. Luke Falk must be licking his chops thinking about this matchup.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Notable stats from the Wildcats’ 34-10 loss

It was not a pretty game for Arizona

The Arizona Wildcats lost an ugly game to the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, 34-10. And when I say ugly, I mean ugly.

Arizona’s defense actually played quite well for the most part. It was the offense, which is becoming an issue this year, that didn’t hold up its end of the bargain. The offense, especially the passing game, just couldn’t get anything going.

Here are some notable stats that led to the loss at home to the Cardinal.

5-for-20

Arizona’s completions and attempts. This pretty much sums up the whole night. The Wildcats’ quarterbacks usually did not have enough time to stand in the pocket and complete passes, and when they did, the receivers weren’t open for the most part. When you are down to playing a receiver at running back, your passing game has to be there. On Saturday, it wasn’t. That being said, Arizona was 3-for-4 for 94 yards on third down.

3-for-14

Arizona on third down conversions. Arizona wasn’t able to get solid gains on first down for the most part, and that made second and third downs difficult.

3.9

Average yards per rush for Arizona. A lack of passing game and 3.9 yards per rush leads to stalled drives. Just not a good game for the offense.

3 and 17

Number of Arizona turnovers and Stanford points off of turnovers. When your offense struggles to get drives going you can’t afford turnovers. Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, that didn’t happen. They lost two fumbles, one on a botched hand-off and the other on a fumbled interception. Brandon Dawkins also overthrew a wide open Shun Brown, and as a result, had the pass intercepted. All turnovers led to some sort of points for Stanford.

5

Number of sacks for the Arizona offense. Two of the sacks came on first down, which doesn’t help a struggling offense at all. The remaining three came on third down. You know how that goes.

Vote in our Week Nine Pac-12 Power Rankings

How does the top part of your list shake down now?

The Pac-12 still has two teams undefeated in conference play, but just one winless team after the Oregon Ducks beat Arizona State pretty soundly in Eugene on Saturday.

In the nation’s premier game of the week, the Washington Huskies remained unbeaten on the year, and kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive with a 31-24 victory over the Utah Utes. The Washington State Cougars also improved to 5-0 in the conference, coming from behind to take down the Oregon State Beavers 35-31.

So how do you see this conference now? You can come vote in this week’s reader power rankings by clicking this link or voting in the form below. We will leave voting open until at least Tuesday morning, and will put out the voting totals later in the week.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Grading the Wildcats’ 34-10 loss to the Cardinal

Does anyone on offense deserve a passing grade?

The Arizona Wildcats put on one of the worst offensive performances in recent memory against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday night, posting just ten points and 286 total yards.

So how does each position group grade out? Well....

Quarterbacks: D-

With both Anu Solomon and Brandon Dawkins available for the first time since Week One, the coaching staff went with Dawkins for the majority of the game.

The redshirt sophomore ended up completing just five passes on 15 attempts, totaling 116 yards through the air. On the ground, he netted 65 yards on 17 attempts, but was sacked four times.

What was concerning with Dawkins’ run game was that there were multiple occasions when he could have picked up first downs, but either sought out contact, or gave himself up before reaching the line of gain. There was almost no field awareness on his part, and it put the offense in positions it shouldn’t have been in.

Solomon played two drives. He was unable to complete any of his three attempts, was sacked once, and he fumbled what appeared to be a botched handoff. Not great.

Khalil Tate got the garbage time drive, and was an imperfect 0-for-2 through the air as well. The five total completions by Arizona quarterbacks was the team’s fewest since 2000 when they completed three passes for 11 yards in a WIN.

Running backs: C-

I never thought I’d see the day where Samajie Grant was Arizona’s starting and primary running back in a meaningful conference game, but it happened on Saturday night. He finished the night with 64 yards on 19 carries, but one massive 24-yard loss really hurt his per carry average.

Overall, I thought Grant did decently well at the position, especially for a wide receiver seeing his first significant time at RB since high school. He gave himself a D- in the postgame press conference, but I’ll be a little nicer than that.

However, I am concerned with Zach Green’s one total carry in the game. Walk-on Branden Leon was able to pick up four carries and 20 yards in the garbage time drive. I’m in favor of playing actual running backs at running back, and Green and Leon should get more opportunities.

Wide receivers: D+

While Arizona’s offensive line doesn’t allow a lot of time for routes to develop, there are instances when the Wildcats’ quarterbacks sit in the pocket, but more often than not, there’s no one to throw to. The passing game is just awful, and a little bit of the blame needs to be placed here. But the rest of the blame comes next.

Offensive line: F

I’m not even sure how to describe Arizona’s offensive line play in conference games. There’s no consistency, which doesn’t allow for the quarterbacks to gain any confidence, and it doesn’t let the running game open up either. A successful offense needs a good, consistent offensive line, and Arizona just isn’t that right now.

Defensive line: B+

Early in the game, Arizona was getting into the backfield early and often, even when Stanford ran out goal line packages, and jumbo packages, and even eight linemen at one time.

Most people expected this group to be awful this year, and honestly, they may be the best part about this defense in 2016. Also, can we get Justin Belknap a scholarship yet?

Linebackers: C+

This is another aspect of the team that has been a pleasant surprise at times. The unfortunate injury to Michael Barton kind of changed the team’s fortunes in the second half, allowing Christian McCaffrey to break loose. Paul Magloire had probably his best game of the season, but DeAndre’ Miller was ineffective. Overall a so-so game here.

Secondary: B-

As bad as Arizona’s passing game was, Stanford’s wasn’t much better. They went 14-of-31 for 104 yards, and didn’t complete a pass longer than 18 yards. Three of Arizona’s top four tacklers in the game were members of the secondary (Dane Cruikshank, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and Jace Whittaker) thanks to some deep runs. It’s crazy to think that Arizona is 2-6 and it’s not really the defense’s fault.

Special teams: C

Nothing stood out. At least McCaffrey didn’t return a kick to the house without the aide of a block in the back and a hold.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Wildcats’ Players of the Game

Another Pac-12 loss for Arizona.

It wasn’t a great night for the Arizona Wildcats, taking yet another loss in Pac-12 play, dropping to 0-5 on the season, 2-6 overall. It also wasn’t easy to find players of the game in all three phases.

Offense: Samajie Grant

This was Arizona’s worst offensive performance of the season in terms of scoring, putting up only 10 points.

No quarterback could find success behind the offensive line. Brandon Dawkins went 5-of-15 for 116 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Anu Solomon went 0-for-3 and lost a fumble. Khalil Tate got the final drive and went 0-for-2, but had a 19-yard rush.

But the Samajie Grant running back experiment wasn’t terrible. Rich Rodriguez said that he’s still learning the position and he will remain the starting running back. Grant finished with 19 carries for 64 yards. His numbers also would have been much better if he didn’t backtrack for a 20+ yard loss early in the game.

It should be more concerning that Zach Green still doesn’t have trust after being in the program for three years.

Defense: Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Paul Magloire

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles seemed to be everywhere for the defense. He finished the game with five solo tackles — eight total — and a pass breakup. Still only a sophomore, Flannigan-Fowles will continue to be a leader for this defense.

Paul Magloire also had himself a nice night. He registered eight tackles, a sack, and two tackles for loss. The staff has been sending him in on the quarterback off the edge and he’s created a lot of pressure for the defense.

The defensive line also deserves a lot of credit as well. Justin Belknap is an honorable mention, who still isn’t on scholarship.

Special Teams: Josh Pollack

Pollack had to punt a lot with the stagnant offense. He was sent out seven times and accumulated 275 yards, including a long of 53 yards. He averaged 39.3 yards a kick and pinned one inside the 20-yard line.

He also knocked out a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Tweets of the game

Think of this as an oral history of this weekend’s game. It is much shorter and much, much more enjoyable than the game itself.

The Stanford Cardinal may have killed the Arizona Wildcats on the field this weekend, but Arizona still killed it on Twitter. Let’s take a look at how Twitter told the story of this week’s blowout.

The defense stepped up early on.

But the offense didn’t.

The game dragged.

Once Stanford broke the seal, it was probably over.

The Samajie Grant-at-running-back experiment suffered a few setbacks.

While Christian McCaffrey remembered that he’s Christian McCaffrey.

And everything just kept going wrong for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats still had a shot entering halftime.

Though the fans didn’t seem to think so.

Anu Solomon showed up.

Briefly.

There’s still reason for hope.

And we’ll always have Abraham Lincoln.

But for now: Bear down, Arizona.

Arizona football: Watch the Wildcats postgame press conferences after loss to Stanford

Here’s what RichRod and the players had to say after the game.

After the Arizona Wildcats got dominated by the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday night, Rich Rodriguez gave short, terse answers to start.

He started to change his tone as he turned his focus to players that care about this program, and care about winning.

Here’s the full press conference video:

After that, Samajie Grant, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and Jacob Alsadek all took the stand to give their thoughts on the game, grade themselves, and some other thoughts as well.

Stanford vs. Arizona final score: Five takeaways from the Wildcats’ 34-10 loss to the Cardinal

Still winless in conference play

The Arizona Wildcats are one of seven teams in Power Five conferences still winless in conference play (2-6, 0-5 Pac-12) after losing to the Stanford Cardinal on Homecoming weekend.

It was not an aesthetically pleasing game in anyway possible, and ended so late that East Coasters probably don’t even know the game happened.

So here are the five biggest takeaways from a long, lonely night in Tucson.

1. Anu Solomon may have been available, but was not ready

Brandon Dawkins got the start, but midway through the third quarter, with Arizona trailing 17-7, Rich Rodriguez swapped in Anu Solomon at quarterback.

It didn’t go well.

Solomon was wearing a fairly substantial brace on his left knee, and rolled out right on three of these plays, overthrowing Cam Denson when the wide receiver was open on incompletion number three. Dawkins was promptly put back in the game after the mishandled handoff that led to a fumble.

2. No quarterback can succeed with this offensive line

The one consistent of Arizona’s season has been shoddy offensive line play, and this eighth game of the season was no exception. Christian Boettcher got the start at left guard over Freddie Tagaloa, and Boettcher was not ideal, letting his guys get into the backfield on a fairly regular basis.

If the offensive line this year was halfway decent, I think Dawkins, Solomon, and even Khalil Tate would be having success. But with the current situation, there’s no reason to believe Arizona will have decent numbers from its quarterbacks.

3. Michael Barton is a pretty important part of the defense

Early in the game, the Wildcats were actually getting to Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst often. They were also able to at least contain Christian McCaffrey, even when the Cardinal would have jumbo offensive line formations with seven or even eight guys up front.

Then the Michael Barton injury happened.

The fifth-year guy from Cal sustained what appears to be a knee injury. He did come back in for short time wearing a brace, but was seen in sweats on the sideline in the second half. After Barton was hurt, the defense was unable to stop McCaffrey, and Stanford was able to get big plays and put up more points than it had all year.

If Barton’s injury is somewhat long-term (only four weeks left in the season), that could be enormously detrimental to this defense moving forward.

4. Samajie Grant was actually alright at running back

Outside of one horrific run where Grant ran for a 24-yard loss, he wasn’t bad at running back, considering he’s a wide receiver. Yes, he left some yardage out there running east and west instead of north and south, but he was hitting holes when they were there, and making guys miss in the open field just like he does after catches.

It is concerning that Zach Green still hasn’t earned enough trust from the coaching staff after all these years that not one, but two wide receivers have jumped him on the depth chart.

5. Being honest, Abe Lincoln is the best Halloween costume

Also spotted: Hot dog, mustard bottle, sharks, Spongebob, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Arizona football recruiting: Immediate contributors from the Wildcats’ 2017 class

Early playing time has been the big sell for this class and there are plenty of strong candidates to fill the voids

Rich Rodriguez talks a lot about how he thinks this incoming 2017 class will be able to help with the depth chart. The class is loaded with 27 commitments and a lot of talent from top to bottom. Depth has been an issue with the Arizona Wildcats due to some recruiting errors and plenty of injuries.

While I take a look into who the potential contributors could be as they enter their first season at Arizona, here are some quick recruiting notes before I go into the bulk of the commitments.

Cody Shear set to officially visit this weekend

Offensive line isn’t the sexiest position to recruit, but it’s one of the most heavily recruited positions for every school given the need for five starters. Arizona is currently working with two offensive linemen for this class and I have a strong reason to believe that they’re working on a third.

I’ve been able to work up a great relationship with Shear and while he had a load of offers, seeking out an Oregon offer, he is firm on his commitment and will be in town this weekend for his official visit.

As I mentioned before, offensive line recruits aren’t the most fun to watch, but when you watch 3-star OG Cody Shear out of Sheldon High School (Eugene, OR), it gets you pretty excited. Sheldon High is currently 7-1 on the season.

Kurtis Brown will not require surgery, picks up UNLV offer

A few weeks ago it was announced that 3-star defensive tackle commit Kurtis Brown had torn his meniscus, keeping him out for the remainder of his senior season. Turns out that he won’t need surgery after all, and will try and return for the final stretch of his season at Liberty High School.

During the last week, he also picked up an offer from UNLV. Brown is still solid on his commitment.

4-star running back O’Maury Samuels official visit

This is sort of a new name here. He expressed his interest back in the summer, saying that he wanted to take an official visit to Arizona at some point, despite his commitment to Michigan.

Michigan also seems to be in position to land 4-star running back Eno Benjamin, who just decommitted from Iowa earlier last week. With that, it could force Samuels out.

That’s a lot of speculation here, but with the pitch of having Nathan Tilford and Samuels as your premier backs in this offense for four years and getting him on campus for this official visit, all while playing close to home, it’s a good sign for this staff.

Early playing time from the 2017 commitments

I’ve mentioned quite a bit that the recruiting pitch for this staff has been early playing time at a Pac-12 South program just two years removed from the Fiesta Bowl. Rodriguez talks highly about this recruiting class, and how he’s hopeful that these guys will make an immediate impact.

The 2016 recruiting class only had 18 members, yet nine have already played this season. Given the talent in this 2017 class, and the movement that has happened all down the depth chart, this class figures to have even more immediate contributors.

Two of the obvious ones are Greg Johnson and Tilford. Cornerback play has shown improvement but still lacks depth. With Johnson in the mix, he’s likely to be in that three-man rotation with Dane Cruikshank and Jace Whittaker if he doesn’t win the job outright by fall camp.

Given the health of Nick Wilson, the dismissal of Orlando Bradford, and the broken ankle suffered by J.J. Taylor, the backfield has been a mess this year. While it’s hard to rely on Wilson, Tilford is in great position to be that every-down back for Arizona. I also expect Arizona to add one more running back with this class, with a decent chance of flipping Samuels.

Arizona has loaded up on defensive backs in the 2016 and 2017 classes, and you figure the 2017 class will have a lot of special team contributors like Chacho Ulloa and Lorenzo Burns, or rotational guys like Tristan Cooper or Isaiah Hayes playing immediately.

With the defensive back situation, currently holding six commitments, I think Rhedi Short, Scott Young, and Xavier Bell all see early playing time next season as true freshmen.

There’s a big group of receivers coming in as well. This year, the quarterback play has been subpar, which can be attributed to poor offensive line play. But still, Arizona doesn’t have the receivers out there like it once did the past few years. Losing the trio of Samajie Grant, Trey Griffey, and Nate Phillips hurts the depth big time.

That’s when you have Brian Casteel, Drew Dixon, and Darrian McNeal likely coming in to play. The wide receivers are all fairly young now, with Shun Brown, Cedric Peterson, Tyrell Johnson, Devaughn Cooper, and Tony Ellison. Shawn Poindexter will also have one more season and Zach Benjamin will finally be eligible. Poindexter, Benjamin, and Dixon can provide the Wildcats with immediate height on the outside. Don’t forget about the addition of 5-star wide receiver Joseph Lewis.

Arizona brings in a chess piece with Tony Fields. I feel like he will be solid enough to play a linebacker role, yet also mobile and athletic enough to fill a bandit role in the defense. While I’m not sure where he fits in, he’s going to be a versatile piece. He’s also an early enrollee, and we’ve seen the benefits of that extra spring for freshmen.

Linebacker depth certainly takes a hit this offseason as well, losing Paul Magloire, Jake Matthews and Michael Barton. That’s where Delshawn Phillips comes in. He told me the staff wants him off the edge or in the box. He’s been having a highly productive season at Garden City CC, which is currently the No. 1 JuCo program in the nation. Phillips will be enrolling in January.

The Elijah Watson camp told me that he will be enrolling early at Arizona, because the staff feels like he can be an immediate impact guy for the line. That was also a factor into his decision to transfer to IMG Academy. The 6-foot-3, 280 pound defensive tackle should gain a lot of experience this spring and even help push guys like Justin Holt.

College football coaching buyouts: A Growing Issue

The money in this sport is amazing

The 2016 Arizona Wildcats football campaign has been a tumultuous one with the fanbase questioning head coach Rich Rodriguez’s job commitment and security. The former Michigan head coach flirted with the South Carolina job last year and this year’s team is on the precipice of not qualifying for a bowl game for the first time in his Wildcat tenure. Conclusions can be drawn that a change at the top may be in order. However Athletic Director Greg Byrne shot down that notion earlier this month.

While it seems like a good idea to make a coaching switch, the contract buyouts are increasingly becoming a problem. Today’s head coaching agreements are heavily loaded with guarantees for five years and beyond that are a byproduct of the industry recruiting practices.

Armed with long-term job security, head coaches promise that they will be on campus for the entire college career of new incoming freshmen. Recruiting, agents, and predicting future success based on recent performance has ballooned the industry payoffs.

This presents a growing issue in the college football coaching ranks as schools are now having to deal with exorbitant exit fees with a new image of tightening the purse strings on the next new hire. USA Today documents universities and their coaching buyout blunders that are causing schools to rethink their hiring and firing processes.

Rodriguez is under contract through 2020 and Arizona would be on the hook for anywhere between $7 million - $9 million; a hard nut to stomach and something the Wildcat faithful might want to think about before calling for his head.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Five potential impact Cardinal against the Wildcats

Keller Chryst hopes to have another break-out game against the Wildcats

The Stanford Cardinal have not had the season they thought they would. They won their first three games, but have dropped three of their last four. Overall, Stanford is 4-3 with a conference record of 2-3.

The Cardinal are limping into Tucson, hoping to reverse their fortunes. Meanwhile, the Arizona Wildcats are looking for their first conference win of the year.

Let’s take a look at some Cardinal players who hope to lead Stanford to a win.

Keller Chryst, QB (#10)

2016 Stats: 7-for-18, 63 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT; 11 car, 11 yds, 0 TD

The junior from Palo Alto, California hasn’t had a very productive season so far. However, with Ryan Burns’ struggles, Chryst will get a chance to get Stanford’s season turned around. Last year he had a somewhat decent game against Arizona, going 4-for-4 passing with 39 yards and a touchdown.

Chryst can be a threat tucking the ball and running. Arizona’s defense will have to be wary of that aspect of his game and contain him.

Christian McCaffrey, RB (#5)

2016 Stats: 120 car, 612 yds, 3 TD; 20 rec, 180 yds, 1 TD

Stanford’s do-it-all junior is one of, if not the most, dynamic and explosive running backs in the country. Last year he set an NCAA record for all-purpose yards (3,864) and finished as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He was named to 16 preseason All-Something teams this year and is on the watch list for four annual awards.

Last year, he burned the ‘Cats for 156 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. This year his production has been down a little, partly due to missing a game with an undisclosed injury, partly due to stout defenses and poor offensive line play.

He can line up in the backfield, slot, and Wildcat. Arizona is going to have to stop McCaffrey (including on punt and kickoff returns) or the game could get out of hand like last year.

Michael Rector, WR (#3)

2016 Stats: 21 rec, 257 yds, 1 TD; 3 car, 64 yds, 1 TD

The fifth-year senior from my wife’s hometown of Gig Harbor, Washington is Stanford’s deep threat along the outside. He has sure hands and rarely drops passes, however, this year has been a little bit of a struggle for him.

Last year against Arizona, he was pretty quiet until he had a 42-yard reception and an 18-yard touchdown catch. He finished the game with 72 yards on four catches plus the touchdown. Overall, he had a very consistent year, and that earned him two 2016 preseason All-Pac-12 team honors.

Solomon Thomas, DL (#90)

2016 Stats: 37 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble rec

Thomas is a monster, to be quite frank. He is one of the best defensive linemen in the Pac-12 and shows it week in and week out. Last year, he was awarded All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors and was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list for this year. He also made two All-Pac-12 preseason teams.

He leads the Stanford team in tackles (37), TFL (8.5), and sacks (5.5). He gets great push against the line and can easily shed blocks to disrupt plays in the backfield. Arizona’s offensive line has to communicate effectively in order to stop Cardinal defenders such as Thomas from blowing up plays in the backfield.

Peter Kalambayi, LB (#34)

2016 Stats: 20 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks

Kalambayi is an aggressive linebacker that was named to the Butkus Award watch list this year. He also made two preseason All-Pac-12 teams. He plays the run well and can also be an effective pass rusher.

He is a sideline-to-sideline backer that chases plays all over the field. His production has been down this year, but if you consider how many TFL and sacks he has compared to tackles, it shows his playmaking ability. He will look to stuff the Arizona run game on Saturday in order to make the ‘Cats as one dimensional as they were against USC two weeks ago.

Arizona football injury report: Nick Wilson out vs. Stanford, Brandon Dawkins, Anu Solomon not listed

Is Anu Solomon healthy enough to play now?

The bye week has evidently helped the Arizona Wildcats refresh.

The team’s injury report for Saturday’s Homecoming game versus Stanford has been released, and the list of names is far shorter than what we’re used to seeing.

Here’s the full report:

Probable: OL Freddie Tagaloa (knee)

Questionable: WR Tyrell Johnson (hamstring)

Doubtful: None

Out: DL Sani Fuimaono (concussion), RB Nick Wilson (knee)

The biggest names not on the list are quarterbacks Brandon Dawkins (concussion, ribs) and Anu Solomon (knee).

Dawkins appears to be healthy and therefore will likely start Saturday. Solomon’s name being omitted is interesting because while he did practice with the team for the first time last week, Rich Rodriguez didn’t say anything to make it seem as though he’s close to returning to game action, though.

Maybe he was playing it close to vest and Solomon has a chance to play, though I personally wouldn’t expect it.

Of course, starting running back Nick Wilson, who Rodriguez said has a long-term injury, will not suit up against the Cardinal, and it’s not clear when (or if) he’ll return this season.

Defensively, it’s a pretty clean bill of health for the Wildcats, though starting defensive lineman Sani Fuimaono is out with a concussion.

Fuimaono left the USC game two weeks ago after taking a hit to the head, and said he was fine after the game, but it appears the injury is still affecting him.

The Wildcats (2-5, 0-4 Pac-12) are looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the Cardinal (4-3, 2-3 Pac-12) this Saturday.

Kickoff at Arizona Stadium is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Stanford vs. Arizona: Previewing the Cardinal and the Wildcats by the numbers

Two disappointing teams enter - only one will leave with a win. We dive into the numbers to see if the Wildcats can pull off their first conference win of the season.

Each week, we take a look at the Arizona Wildcats’ upcoming match-up and dive into some of the advanced statistics underlying the game. This week, we take a look at a team that entered the year in the top ten and is currently 2-3 in the Pac-12: the Stanford Cardinal.

20.3 - Stanford’s points allowed per game

For all of Stanford’s troubles this year, the Cardinal are still stout defensively. Stanford is allowing only 20.3 points per game this season, which ranks 23rd in FBS. They’re slightly more impressive when you account for opponent and pace, ranking 20th in defensive S&P+.

The problem for the Cardinal is that, despite their reputation, they’re actually better against the pass than against the run. Stanford’s pass defense per S&P+ ranks 18th in the nation while their run defense ranks 63rd. Worse, Alijah Holder, a starting cornerback who was preseason All-Pac-12 third team, is now out for the year. The Cardinal have dealt with injures in the secondary all season, but losing Holder certainly hurts them in the passing game.

Stanford is solid defensively, but the Wildcats may have the opportunity to take advantage of Stanford’s run defense to put some points on the board.

17.0 - Stanford’s points scored per game

On the other side of the ball, Stanford has been garbage. Their 17.0 points per game ranks 125th in FBS. The Cardinal, though, typically take their time on offense and avoid running tempo compared to most other teams in college football. Once you account for that....Stanford’s offense ranks 107th in FBS. I mean, the Stanford offense (3 points) barely outscored the Stanford defense (2 points) in last week’s game against Colorado. Not great.

Stanford’s rushing attack has been okay - not anywhere near as good as a team featuring Christian McCaffrey should be, but not awful - but the passing game has disappointed. That may change this week, as Keller Chryst is replacing Ryan Burns at quarterback. On the other hand, if Chryst were that good, he would have probably started over Burns in the first place.

Fortunately for Stanford, Arizona’s defense is also quite bad, ranking 102nd in FBS per S&P+. This is the classic match-up between the stoppable force and the movable object. I expect this game will be very ugly when these two units are on the field together.

43% - Arizona’s likelihood of winning this game, per S&P+

There is reason for hope, though! S&P+ gives the Wildcats a 43% chance of winning this game. That’s better odds than Arizona has had in any match-up since the Hawaii game over a month ago.

The same theme we’ve echoed all season applies here: Arizona has a decent chance to win this game, but they probably won’t. The Wildcats still aren’t a very good football team, and Stanford is still better. The reason for hope is that the difference between the two teams is relatively small and the Wildcats get to play at home. That means Arizona has a decent chance to finally win a conference game. Let’s hope they do.

Arizona football: Rich Rodriguez’s buyout reportedly just under $9 million

This is a lot of money

As the Arizona Wildcats continue to struggle over the past year and a half, the public outcry for some sort of coaching change has slowly grown.

Since clinching the Pac-12 South against the Arizona State Sun Devils on November 28th, 2014, Arizona has gone just 9-13, including a record of 3-11 against Pac-12 teams.

There’s a lot that goes into a coaching change, and at Arizona, one of the bigger factors is money. And it will cost a lot of money for the Wildcats to get rid of Rich Rodriguez.

How much?

According to USA Today, just shy of $9 million.

The $8,912,500 figure USA Today has pegged to Rodriguez is somehow nowhere near the top of the list in college football. He’s actually 33rd, however Les Miles, who has actually been fired, checks in at No. 31.

Rodriguez isn’t even the highest on the list of coaches in the state of Arizona. Todd Graham would be owed $14,208,333, the 15th-highest mark in the nation. Jimbo Fisher is at the top of the list nationally. He would be owed more than $33 million by Florida State if he were fired without cause.

Arizona’s mark is 7th in the conference, though USC and Stanford do not have to report these numbers because they are private schools.

Greg Byrne has said that the idea of firing Rodriguez right now is “ridiculous”. Surely one of the factors in that comment has to do with this contract.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Costume contest coming to Arizona/Stanford this weekend

Wear your best Halloween Costume to the football game this weekend

Homecoming activities will really start to ramp up around The University of Arizona on Thursday. This year’s has been billed as “Haunted Homecoming”, since, well, Halloween is next Monday. At the Arizona Wildcats football game on Saturday, we’re going to get a potential treat as the ZonaZoo is hosting a costume contest. At halftime, three finalists will be voted on, and the winner will watch the third quarter from the field

The first time I read this, I thought everyone that wore a Halloween costume would be allowed on the field, and I guarantee more people would show up to the game if that were the case

- Brandon Dawkins seems likely to play Saturday, and having his swag and confidence back on the field could be big for this team

- On the flip side, Stanford will be starting Keller Chryst for the first time in his career

- The Wildcats will be wearing the same uniform combo they wore in the Fiesta Bowl

Basketball

- Maybe the mid-game costume contest will have some sort of influence on five-star forward Brian Bowen, who will be visiting Tucson this weekend

- Allonzo Trier was ranked as the 6th-best off-guard in the country by College Basketball Talk

- This year’s preseason tournament is Las Vegas. Next year’s is Atlantis. And the year after that? Maui, in what could be the best field the islands have ever seen

Baseball

- Official AZDS World Series team Cleveland Indians lost 5-1 to the Cubs on Wednesday, evening the series at one game apiece

Other sports

- Don’t forget: beer and wine at the soccer game Thursday night. Cash only

- Ezra Amacher made his debut for the site by recapping men’s golf’s decent outing at Pebble Beach

- Softball closed out their fall schedule without allowing a run

- Volleyball will not be partaking in the Homecoming festivities, as they’ll be travelling north to take on the Oregon schools

- Samantha Czarniak’s journey from Brazil to Tucson is an intriguing one

Tucson news

- U of A research has disproved the long-held belief of a “Patient Zero” in the spread of HIV/AIDS in the United States in the 80’s

- There was a cross-town car chase after a bank robbery on Wednesday
