2016 NFL Draft results: Cayleb Jones signs with Philadelphia Eagles as undrafted free agent

Cayleb will try to carry on his family's legacy

After deciding to forego his senior season with the Arizona Wildcats, wide receiver Cayleb Jones went undrafted, but has latched on with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jones is certainly not the first member of his family to get a chance to play in the NFL. His father, Robert Jones, played for the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys over the course of a ten year career. Cayleb's uncle also happens to be Jeff Blake, who started 100 games at quarterback in the league for four different teams. Blake was throwing passes to Cayleb at Arizona's Pro Day.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Jones started his college career with the Longhorns, before some legal troubles led to him deciding to start fresh elsewhere.

He transferred to Arizona, joined by Texas teammate Connor Brewer. The two sat out the 2013 season, but it was Jones that would leave his mark in 2014.

Jones instantly became Arizona's most prolific receiver, catching 73 balls for 1,019 yards in his first year in Rich Rodriguez' system.

Big things were expected in 2015, but with inconsistent quarterback play combined with Pac-12 defenses focusing on taking him away, Jones' numbers dropped in his redshirt campaign. He managed to get to 55 catches and 904 yards despite an extremely slow start to his final college season.

With the dip in production, it became a little more unclear whether or not Jones would declare early for the draft or not. But it didn't take long to get our answer. On December 27th, he officially decided to leave Arizona.

It'll be interesting to see how Jones performs against bigger, more physical NFL defensive backs when he gets to training camp. Hopefully he can make the Eagles' roster though and carry on the family tradition.

2016 NFL Draft: David Richards signs with Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent

The 6-foot-4 receiver has a chance to make an NFL team

Another former Arizona Wildcats player has been snatched up by NFL team.

This time it's wide receiver David Richards apparently agreeing to join the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent, per his personal Twitter account:

Richards, a fifth-year senior, played in 48 games with the Wildcats and started 25 of them. In total, he caught 110 passes for 1,205 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His best season came just this past season as a senior, when he had 43 catches for 548 yards and six touchdowns, all of which were career-highs.

The 6-foot-4, 213 pound receiver filled in nicely when Trey Griffey missed most of the year with an injury, emerging as a big target for Arizona's quarterbacks, especially in the red-zone.

Richards' senior class won 33 games in four years, the winningest stretch in Arizona football history.

The details of Richards' agreement with the Falcons are unknown.

2016 NFL Draft: Reggie Gilbert signs as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers

The defensive end didn't get drafted, but he'll still have a chance to make an NFL roster

As expected, former Arizona Wildcats defensive end Reggie Gilbert didn't have his name called during the 2016 NFL Draft, but he has managed to find a new home nonetheless, agreeing to sign with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent.

Gilbert was a four-year starter at Arizona, totaling 143 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 14.0 sacks during his career as a Wildcat. He also forced three fumbles, recovered two and broke up three passes.

In 2015, Gilbert served as one of the team's captains and led Arizona with 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, leading him to be named as an honorable mention of the Pac-12 All-Conference team.

As with any undrafted free agent, Gilbert will have an uphill battle to make an NFL roster, but it's not exactly unheard of for undrafted free agents to wind up having long, successful careers. Let's just hope he can make the most of the opportunity that he has earned.

The terms of the deal are unknown.

2016 NFL Draft results: Scooby Wright selected in the 7th round by the Cleveland Browns

It took longer than anticipated, but Scooby has found his new home

Former Arizona Wildcats linebacker Scooby Wright III will get his chance at NFL greatness with the Cleveland Browns. They drafted him with the No. 250 overall pick in the 7th round of the 2016 NFL Draft on Saturday.

After winning every major individual defensive award in 2014, it seemed like Wright was poised for a historical 2015 season at Arizona.

But the injury bug bit him early. Wright suffered a knee injury in the season-opener against the UTSA Roadrunners, which kept him out of the remainder of the non-conference season.

The decorated linebacker returned to the field against the UCLA Bruins, a game that was highlighted by the second appearance of College GameDay on the Arizona campus. After the broadcast, it was all downhill.

Arizona got blown out, and the following Monday, Rich Rodriguez announced that Wright had suffered a foot sprain, which would keep him out indefinitely.

Indefinitely turned out to be the rest of the regular season. He would return to the field for the New Mexico Bowl, where he showed off his skills in a game one final time. Wright piled up 15 tackles against the New Mexico Lobos to go with a pair of sacks.

Immediately after the game, he announced he was declaring for the NFL Draft, opting out of his senior season at Arizona.

At the end of the 2014 season, you would have figured Wright was almost a lock to be drafted in the first round whenever he decided to enter the NFL Draft. But a year of injuries, combined with poor combine workouts, have put Wright in a position where he can prove every team in the league wrong, which may be exactly what he needs to succeed.

Here's hoping to a long, productive NFL career for Scooby Wright, and we know that the Browns have added an elite football player.

2016 NFL Draft results: Will Parks drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 6th round

The hard-hitting safety will get a shot with the defending Super Bowl Champs

It was interesting to see Will Parks' name come up more and more throughout the NFL Draft process. It made people wonder if Parks would hear his name called during the actual NFL Draft. And it turns out, he did, being selected by the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in the sixth round (No. 219 overall).

With Scooby Wright out for most of the 2015 season, Parks led the Arizona Wildcats in tackles, totaling 76 in 13 games, seven of those for loss.

In between his final game, which was the New Mexico Bowl against his brother, and the NFL Draft, Parks bulked up big-time. Already a hard-hitter in the Wildcats' secondary, he added a lot of muscle mass, allowing him to bench 225 pounds 21 times at Arizona's Pro Day.

Good luck to Will as he pursues his dream of being an NFL player. Hopefully he'll be able to lock down a roster spot with the Broncos.

Arizona football recruiting: 3-star DT Elijah Watson verbally commits to Wildcats

Another defensive line commit for Arizona's 2017 recruiting class

Elijah Watson, 3-star defensive tackle out of Lawrenceville, Georgia was anxiously waiting for Scooby Wright III's name to be called in the NFL Draft.

But Watson couldn't wait long enough for Scooby to get selected to make this announcement. Watson ended his recruitment process and committed to the Arizona Wildcats, giving the class their seventh member, third on defense.

Watson was on campus a few weeks ago for Junior Day and I had a chance to speak with him after his trip. He told me that Arizona was his leader, despite picking up interest from Missouri and Mississippi State, among a few others.

Watson checks in at 6-foot-3, 270 lbs, and will add much-needed size on the defensive line.

His junior year highlights are below.

Top 5: My Favorite Phoenix Dive Bars

Dinner and bad lighting at the Dirty Verde.

Whiskey lunch special and bad lighting at the Dirty Verde.

My fresh-faced drinking years were waylaid inside the gallows of a dive. There are, in fact, few social pleasures more sentimental to me than wearing out cracked leather bar stools on a Sunday with best friends, drinking sleazy booze and mixers, looking down the barrel of destiny with last-call shots, scraping pocket to purse for just one more New Order track on the juke.

Don’t misunderstand, I love and appreciate the ceremony of a well-tuned bar experience, sipping the best from our city’s letterman bartenders in a sort of self-conscious civility. However, sometimes you want something different. Sometimes you want a dive bar.

Though not an exhaustive playbook, here are five of my Phoenix all-times.

Shady’s Fine Ales and CocktailsPhoenix
Honestly, Shady’s is one of my favorite Phoenix bars. The Arcadia adjacent mainstay swings fairly tame on the dive purity spectrum (see: the bathrooms are actually clean), but the bones and the spirit are there. And though mixology isn’t the reason you go, if you snag the right bartender, they can cobble a solid cocktail. Bar manager Justin Vargo also happens to be one of my favorite bartenders in town. If you don’t know him, you should.

Bikini Loungedowntown Phoenix
Go here for diluted mini pitchers, surly bar staff and cheap, posture-correcting cocktails. One of the only remaining jewels of Phoenix’s once-large collection of postwar tiki bars, at least architecturally, Bikini Lounge now stands lonely and proud. This is where generations of Downtown cool kids (First Fridays is always a cluster) continue to lay claim as one of Arizona’s most storied dive bars. This is where I go to feel 18 again. I mean 21.

Swizzle Innuptown Phoenix
Who wouldn’t love the Swizzle? The classic no-frills neighborhood hideout with, get this, friendly bartenders, is the type of gateway bar you drag new friends to, wanting to gauge their own dive readiness. It’s where regulars go for stiff mid-day drinks, rounds of sloppy pool with new friends (the true magic of a dive bar) and a jukebox consistent with love or hate classics like Garth Brooks and Journey.

TT RoadhouseScottsdale
Another rowdy neighborhood bar that manages to pull the thirsty from a wide radius to lay low inside its dark, wood-paneled rooms, TT Roadhouse is a Scottsdale classic. Like most good dive bars, the crowds evolve with the clock’s hands, with daylight hours drawing in the rough, tried-and-true, and nighttime pulling a more aware young-set, along with a blue collar overflow from nearby Old Town’s mayhem.

Palo Verde LoungeTempe
Tempe’s time-honored favorite. Throughout Palo Verde Lounge’s countless lives, and passing eras of popularity and disfavor, it remains as authentically dirty, sour and strange as ever. The people watching is unmatched, and the slimy, graffiti draped bathrooms surpass any in town. Order a tall and pull your favorite Doritos flavor off the rack as you luxuriate in the ambiance of snowy X-Files reruns on the corner tube, Queen emotionally playing on the jukebox one too many times and cheek-knawing jailbirds monopolizing the pool tables in a hurried haze of next-hit desperation. Really, it’s a special place.

Honorable mention: Chez Nous (RIP)

Sonoran Hot Reads: Nick Foles on the trading block

The Rams seem to be moving on

Since the Los Angeles Rams took former Cal quarterback Jared Goff with the first pick in this year's NFL Draft, that means former Arizona Wildcats quarterback Nick Foles is now expendable. It seems the team is looking for picks in this year's draft as compensation, and "at least five" teams have expressed interest in acquiring Foles. It's probably better for Foles to go elsewhere since the Rams will be focused on Goff and Case Keenum, but it would have been nice to have him play closer to Tucson. Either way, let's hope he goes somewhere where he'll get an opportunity to succeed

Luke Walton officially named as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers

The Arizona alum takes over the NBA's most well-known franchise

Luke Walton is now a head coach in the National Basketball Association.

The Los Angeles Lakers, less than a week after firing Arizona State alum Byron Scott, have named Walton's as the team's next head coach, it was officially announced Friday night.

"We're excited to bring Luke back to Los Angeles, where we feel he's going to start an outstanding coaching career," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak in a statement. "He's one of the brightest young coaching minds in the game and we feel fortunate that he'll be leading the on-court future of our team."

The former Arizona Wildcats' star has been an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors for the past two seasons, including a temporary stint as the team's interim head coach when Steve Kerr was recovering from back surgery. During that stint, Walton led the Warriors to a 39-4 record, helping the team reach a league-record 73 wins.

Walton's agreement with the Lakers is a multi-year contract, though the financial details have yet to be disclosed. He will start once the Warriors' current playoff run is complete.

Walton, 36, played for the Lakers from 2003-2012, and won two championships with the organization.

Stay tuned for more information.

Arizona football: How JJ Taylor can be utilized as a true freshman

JJ Taylor is fast

A few weeks ago, I took a closer look at the running back depth for the Arizona Wildcats. More importantly, it was a look at the depth should Nick Wilson fall to injuries in his third season.

A guy who should find his way into the mix should be JJ Taylor. Sure, his 5-foot-5, 165 pound frame might be concerning, and he has a ways to go to learn the playbook, but he is definitely in the running for some touches in 2016.

It’s hard to have any sort of projection on the running back depth chart because there are a few guys who could work their way into the rotation, but JJ Taylor is a guy who could work his way in as a true freshman. You know, like Nick Wilson and Orlando Bradford did without being slapped with a redshirt label.

Taylor’s versatility will allow him to see the field early. He’s a short back, but he’s strong and can hold his own, so his playing time shouldn’t be contingent on how much weight he puts on this summer.

Rich Rodriguez hasn’t been opposed to moving his slot receivers to the backfield either. Taylor is an electrifying playmaker and can be used all over the offense, much like a lot of the pieces Rodriguez has at his disposal. But there’s a lot of depth at the slot receiver position with guys like Samajie Grant, Nate Phillips, Tyrell Johnson and Shun Brown in the mix, which would limit the touches and play count for Taylor.

Given his frame and his speed, it’s also hard to imagine Taylor being an every down back. Over the course of his four-year career at Arizona, I see Taylor as a change-of-pace back that can throw the speed of the defense off. It’s similar to the effect of having Anu Solomon and Jerrard Randall sub in and out of a game. The defense gets so used to the speed of Solomon that Randall just feels like an entirely new level of speed.

Having him in a third-and-ten situation might be most ideal, especially if he's on a passing assignment to release out of the backfield, which leads to an area where he can excel in Arizona's offense.

He might not get a whole lot of carries out of the backfield, but I think his value will show when he swings out of the backfield and into the flats.

There are two plays that come to mind when I think of JJ Taylor. One is a read-option where Solomon would follow the running back into the flats, with the option to either cut upfield and run, dump it to the running back or tight end, or find a receiver floating just behind the linebackers.

The other play is just a simple swing pass out of the backfield. JJ Taylor is a guy who’s going to be able to slip between the tackles, but he’ll be much better in open space where he can accelerate and put a move on a defender. Allowing him to swing out into the flats is where he can operate best.

Thinking about the backfield in the future, you’ll have Orlando Bradford, JJ Taylor and Nathan Tilford. Taylor is the wild card that can do some serious damage. His size and speed will cause problems wherever he lines up, especially if he’s used in the slot in an empty backfield set.

In that situation, you’re going to need a strong fifth corner on the depth chart or a freak athlete at linebacker/safety to stop him.

Arizona baseball recap: Wildcats score four in the ninth to down Trojans 8-5

Another impressive late-inning showing by the Wildcats

It looked like the Arizona Wildcats' five-game winning streak was about to come to an end on Thursday night, as they trailed the USC Trojans 5-4 heading into the ninth inning.

USC had been 16-0 when leading after eight innings this year. But the Wildcats weren't going away quietly into the night.

Ryan Aguilar led the 9th off with a walk, bringing up Bobby Dalbec.

Dalbec and head coach Jay Johnson had a short conversation before the at bat, seemingly to decide whether or not to go for the sacrifice bunt or swing away.

The power hitter would not bunt, and instead hit a single to right on a 2-2 count. Aguilar was awarded third base thanks to an interference call on the USC shortstop as he was rounding second.

JJ Matijevic would follow with a single of his own to right field, driving home Aguilar, and tying the game up at five.

Ryan Haug added to it by dropping a sac bunt. But USC pitcher Brooks Kriske bobbled the ball, resulting in the bases becoming full of Wildcats.

Kyle Lewis struck out looking, bringing Justin Behnke up with the bases juiced. You would think safety squeeze in that situation, but Johnson did not put that on. Behnke fell behind 1-2, but then got hit by a pitch, bringing across the go-ahead run in Dalbec.

After that, Kriske threw four-straight balls to Cody Ramer, giving the Wildcats a 7-5 lead, forcing USC head coach Dan Hubbs to make a pitching change.

Brent Wheatley would take over on the mound, facing Zach Gibbons first. Gibbons smoked one at the third baseman, going off his glove, and making it 8-5.

The two-run squeeze play was on with Jared Oliva. Unfortunately, it was with two strikes, and Oliva popped it up foul, resulting in the second out of the inning. Aguilar drove one deep to right for the final out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

After Dalbec scored the go-ahead run, he went straight down to the bullpen to get his arm loose for the bottom half of the ninth.

Looking for the save, Dalbec struck the first batter out looking on a full count, and then an infield hit to Sawyer Gieseke put Corey Dempster on first. Immediately, he stole second. It wouldn't matter though, as Dalbec eventually walked the next batter.

A strikeout and a grounder to third ended the game, sealing the Wildcats' 8-5 win.

This moves Arizona to 11-8 in conference play, and 28-14 overall.

It wasn't all smiles and rainbows though.

Nathan Bannister got the start for the Wildcats. He had only given up one run over his previous three starts, but if there's been one issue for him this year, it's been the first inning.

That showed up against USC on Thursday, resulting in three Trojan runs, putting Arizona down early on.

The Wildcats' first run of the night came on a balk of all things. Dalbec came up to the plate with runners on the corner, and the illegal motion by USC's pitcher brought Ramer home from third. Dalbec would eventually be retired on strikes.

The second run came off the bat of Alfonso Rivas. With Behnke on third and Ramer at second, Rivas bounced a ball to a drawn-in first baseman, who for some reason didn't go home with it to try and get Behnke. Instead, he took the sure out at his bag, giving Rivas an RBI. Arizona probably shouldn't have been in position to score the run. It looked like Behnke was tagged out trying to steal second during Ramer's at bat, but was called safe by the umpire.

Arizona tied the game in the sixth with an interesting wrinkle on a typical play call. With two strikes and the bases loaded, Behnke put down the squeeze bunt, allowing Matijevic to score from third. Unfortunately, Haug was unable to score from second, as the play is supposed to go.

They couldn't take the lead after re-loading the bases for Gibbons. The senior had a rare two-out groundout to end the threat.

USC took the lead right back. Arizona issued an intentional walk to load the bases. Bannister then hit Frankie Rios after working a full count. The Trojans added another on a long sac fly to left by the very next batter, making the score 5-3.

Rio Gomez took over for Bannister, and was stellar in his first outing in nearly a month. The lefty threw two innings of one-hit ball, striking out four Trojans along the way. He's the reason Arizona's even in position to make a run at a win in the ninth.

The two teams meet again on Friday night at 7 PM PT. JC Cloney is scheduled to pitch for Arizona, and the game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.

Arizona football: Rich Rodriguez reacts to NCAA overturning satellite camp ban

This has been a strange battle in the college football world

In a move that some college coaches seem to have expected, the NCAA overturned their original ban on satellite camps, just weeks after the original ruling. This whole saga, among other things, has opened the world's eyes to UCLA's relationship with the Pac-12 office.

So how does this new ruling impact the Arizona Wildcats? Rich Rodriguez had been very critical of the ban, so as you would expect, he was a happy camper on Thursday. So happy that he actually tweeted, which is a thing he only does a few times a year:

Rodriguez was so confident this change of heart from the NCAA was coming he never cancelled Arizona's plans of being a part of satellite camps in the future.

So here we are, back where we originally started, after a whole bunch of bickering and infighting about something that most college football fans didn't even knew existed until a few weeks ago.

The next step Rich Rodriguez will want to see is a change in how the recruiting process works, including getting rid of National Signing Day, and allowing recruits to sign with a school whenever they are ready to fully commit themselves to that school.

That would get rid of the slew of decommits we have seen in recent years, and make it easier on coaching staffs, not having to spend time on "commits" if those players have already signed with that school rather than waiting for some arbitrary date on the calendar.

Will he get it? Maybe. In the NCAA's announcement of the satellite camp ban reversal, they also said the membership will be taking suggestions to improve the recruiting model as a whole.

A better recruiting environment is coming. It's just taking time.

Arizona baseball recruiting: Jacob Blas brings experience on big stage to Wildcats in 2017

This is a big-time prospect the Cats are bringing in

When the Arizona Wildcats visit the USC Trojans this weekend, one UA fan in attendance will have a little more invested in the game than the rest.

Jacob Blas, a 2017 Arizona commit, will make the short trip up to Los Angeles from his hometown of San Marcos, CA.

These won't be the first Arizona games Blas has seen this year. The high school junior made his way to the first of the Wildcats' games at the Tony Gwynn Classic in February, but was too sick to check out all three games.

"I was so sick it was brutal," he joked. "I couldn't go to school, I couldn't even see. I lost like ten pounds. It was just bad."

Blas, who earned a rating of 9.5 out of 10 at a Perfect Game Showcase, will also be attending this year's version, along with a few other Arizona commits.

Jacob has a lot of experience in big-time events before coming to college. He will have participated in a couple of Perfect Game Showcases, including one this coming June, and was even a member of the 15U Team USA team that traveled to Mazatlan, Mexico in 2014.

"I've never been emotional like that, but I was in tears of joy when that happened," he explained of the moment he was selected to take part in that.

"I'd never been like out of the country," Blas continued about going to Mazatlan. "I went to Puerto Rico when I was younger to play baseball, but I had never been on that big of stage."

"That was a life-changing experience for me," Blas said of his time with Team USA. "That opened up so many opportunities for me for the college recruitment. And I developed some unique bonds with my teammates and roommates from that I still have to this day."

"It gave me confidence that I can hang on the big stage."

That big stage will prepare him well when travelling to Pac-12 parks throughout his college career.

"It was crazy," he said of playing against Team Mexico in Mazatlan. "There were like 15,000 people cheering and going against us, and we ended up winning that game. It was so fun. I really like playing in that type of environment. The bigger the game, the more fun they are, and I feel like there will definitely be a lot of them (in the Pac-12)."

Like many Arizona baseball commits, Blas has been to campus during the baseball offseason, taking in the sights and sounds of other Arizona Athletics events while on his visit.

He committed to U of A on his visit in September, choosing the Wildcats over schools like the University of San Diego, San Diego State, Stanford, and Cal State Fullerton. His final three were Arizona, Oregon and USD.

After making the decision to become a Wildcat, Blas returned to Tucson in December for the basketball game against UNLV.

"The atmosphere during the basketball game was really cool," Blas explained. "That was really fun. There were a bunch of us (Arizona baseball commits) there."

Among other places Blas has visited was Oregon, and he actually was on his visit at the same time as former Oregon commit and current Wildcat freshman pitcher Cody Deason.

"I really liked it there," Blas said of his time in Eugene. "The weather though, I'm a hot weather person. And I thought at Oregon the coaches were really cool, but honestly I just fell in love with Jay's coaching style. I just felt really connected to him and that was a much better fit for me as a person."

Coach Johnson had already been pursuing Blas while he was still at Nevada, but the move to Arizona really opened Blas' eyes to what could be.

"I really liked him them," the prospect said about Johnson recruiting him to Nevada. "But I really wanted to go to a bigger school, so I didn't think that would be a good fit for me. But once he came to Arizona, he reached out to me and he saw me play a few times and we kept in touch. Then I came out for the visit, so I went with it."

"I feel like he's a lot more relate-able," Blas explained of what sticks out about Arizona's head coach as opposed to others that were recruiting him. "I really felt connected to him. And I really like his baseball approach. I feel like he's going to be able to develop my game and help me reach my goals."

When Blas arrives on campus in the fall of 2017, all of Arizona's current options at shortstop will have moved on, opening up an opportunity for this freshman to earn playing time right away.

And his style fits perfectly into what Johnson is doing in Tucson, as well as Hi Corbett itself.

"Defense is definitely the strongest part of my game, and I have pretty good speed," Blas said. "I love how they play. It's going to be a good fit. I'm really aggressive and like to use my speed to my advantage."

Plus, the facilities aren't bad either for trying to become a professional baseball player.

"Hi Corbett is just a beautiful ballpark and I can't wait to call it home for the next couple years," he added about Arizona's stadium. "With all the cheering, it was just overwhelming, and they have all the resources you need to succeed."

He says he patterns his game after his role model, Derek Jeter, hitting more line drives than anything. But this video says otherwise:

So what's he trying to do before he makes his way to Arizona, or possibly the MLB Draft?

"Just trying to become a better athlete," explained Blas, who currently stands in at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds. "Just hitting a lot and doing everything I can to be better."

Assuming he doesn't end up being a high draft pick in two years, this is a guy who could keep the recent tradition of great middle infields alive, bringing a strong defensive game along with the kind of offensive game that plays well at Hi C and the rest of the Pac-12.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona baseball projected to host NCAA Regional

This would be some kind of turnaround

The Arizona Wildcats are hot. How hot? They've won seven of their last eight, eight of their last ten, and ten of their last 13, including four-straight on the road in the last six days. That run has them leading the Pac-12 with ten wins, and according to the guys at D1Baseball, has vaulted Arizona into a projected Regional host position. Right now, D1Baseball has the Wildcats hosting Wright State, Vanderbilt and Cal Poly in the first weekend of the NCAA postseason. That would be crazy in Jay Johnson's first year, and after this team has missed the postseason the last three seasons

- On the flip side, College Baseball Daily says Arizona is still a two-seed, bound for the UC-Santa Barbara Regional. In reality, the West Coast has not been very good at baseball this year in general, and that could end up working in Arizona's advantage when the selection committee is selecting a Pacific time zone host

- The hot Wildcats open a three-game series on Thursday night against USC. The game starts at 7 PM PT on Pac-12 Networks

- Let's hope that we get to see Matt Hartman and Tyler Crawford pitch back-to-back at some point so we can watch them hand off the pitching glasses again

Basketball

Arizona basketball: Wildcats to face Gonzaga on December 9 in STAPLES Center as part of Hoophall LA

Will the Wildcats beat Gonzaga four years in a row?

The Arizona Wildcats will be squaring off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in STAPLES Center on Dec. 3 as part of the first-ever Hoophall LA in Los Angeles, CA.

"We are very excited to be part of this year’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame event," Arizona head coach Sean Miller said in a statement. "It’s an honor for our program to be involved with such a prestigious organization and to have the chance to play an excellent opponent in Gonzaga. To be able to continue our history with such a tremendous program in a marquee Southern California setting will be a great experience for our program, fans and alumni."

Hoophall LA is a one-day doubleheader and Arizona-Gonzaga is the first of two games, with the other being between the USC Trojans and BYU Cougars.

"We are excited to play in this event and continue our series against a great program like Arizona," Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said. "It's a tremendous opportunity for our team, and we are looking forward to playing in STAPLES Center."

Arizona and Gonzaga have played each other in each of the past three seasons, with the Wildcats winning all three games. Two of the games were part of a home-and-home series, while the other was in the Round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. But, with the Wildcats set to lose three starters, and the Bulldogs losing four starters, including Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis, this game will feature plenty of new faces on both sides.

Tickets for the event can be purchased by general public starting on May 4 at 10 a.m. PT via AXS.com, by phone at 888-929-7849, and the STAPLES Center box office.

Tipoff times and television information have yet to be announced.

Arizona baseball: Tyler Crawford and Matt Hartman sharing more than just the mound

Because you gotta be able to see at night

The first time the Arizona Wildcats took on the Arizona State Sun Devils in 2016, things didn't go so well for UA.

Basically the only positive to come out of it was the season debut of fifth-year senior Tyler Crawford, who hadn't pitched in just over two years.

But when he took the mound for the first time, cameras caught a weird moment. Matt Hartman, who was pitching before Crawford, handed the senior his pitching glasses.

"I had some texts about it," Crawford said of the moment.

"I had a few people text," Hartman added. "My parents asked me 'What's the deal with the glasses thing?'. But it is what it is."

"Hopefully we can hand 'em off a few more times."

Crawford lost his glasses last year, and since he only has a limited time left in baseball, he didn't want to spend the money on a new pair.

"I didn't need 'em during Tommy John rehab," Crawford explained. "I didn't need to see at night, so I've been without 'em for a while."

There have been a lot of things that have changed around the Arizona baseball team under the new coaching staff, but the need for night-time glasses for Hartman and Crawford is one of the more under-appreciated ones in my opinion.

"With the old coaching staff, it wasn't a big deal because we had a night sign system," continued Crawford. "And then Coach Lawn came in and said we don't do that no matter what, so if you have eye problems, you better go get some glasses."

"That was one of the first things (Lawn) said," added Hartman. "If you're blind, get glasses, because there will be no night signs."

"So maybe it's the old saviness in me that decides to go check other people's glasses before I went to pay for my own, and Hartman's worked great for me," said Crawford.

In steps Hartman, who apparently has a similar prescription to Crawford.

"I asked (Hartman) and said 'We'll never pitch at the same time', so can I borrow 'em when I have to pitch, and he was cool about it."

"I've had 'em since my sophomore year in high school," Hartman said about how old his glasses are now.

But it couldn't have worked out any more perfect that in Crawford's first appearance, he would need to take them right there on the mound, in front of the Pac-12 cameras.

"What's funny is he talked to me about it before the season, and we had been joking about it for a while," Hartman said if they knew this exact situation was going to happen. "Even right before the game, we were talking like 'What if I'm pitching, and you come in right after me?'"

"We've been talking about it since the fall," added Crawford. "What happens then, and sure enough it's the first outing that I have."

Hartman had thrown an inning in that game, and as Jay Johnson headed to the mound to pull him from the game, it seemed to be a roller coaster of emotion for the sophomore.

"Initial reaction, coach comes out and you're a little bummed," explained Hartman. "Then I look up and I see Craw jogging in and started laughing and was like 'Well, here it is'. It's on TV and everything."

Even though it sounds like Crawford was warming up in the Arizona bullpen not being able to see anything, he says otherwise.

"I can see the target, it's the fingers," he explained. "It's not super complex, but there's multiple fingers being flashed with locations and pitches and everything in sequences that we know, but it's very particular, so you have to be able to see all the fingers."

"When I'm warming up I'm fine. I can see the glove no issues whatsoever. It's just the fingers at night. I honestly don't need to use (the glasses) during the day. It's literally just for night time, so it's not a huge deal."

"It's really annoying trying to see the fingers down there," Hartman tacked on.

But what actually happened to Crawford's glasses? There's a bit of an unsolved mystery here that needs to make its way onto the Investigation Discovery Channel or something.

"I don't know whatever happened to mine," he said. "They were in my bag, in a case, and one day the case was gone. I don't know what happened."

"So whoever took Craw's glasses, give 'em back," Hartman shouted at my phone. "Please. You're a thief."

"They're black Oakley-framed."

Let's be real. We're better off not finding the glasses.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Scooby Wright among most underrated NFL Draft prospects

You just know Scooby is going to make teams pay for not taking him

The NFL Draft is fast approaching (oh no, it starts Thursday night). We know that the first Arizona Wildcats player taken will be Scooby Wright III, but it's still unclear if that will happen on Friday, or if he'll have to wait until Saturday for that moment. Meanwhile, Bruce Feldman named "10 underrated gems to keep an eye on", and Scooby is third on the list. Feldman's take:

"There hasn't been a more productive linebacker in college football in recent years than Wright was as a sophomore in 2014. His impact on games was staggering. He had 163 tackles, 29 TFLs, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles. And, it's not like rival offenses were worried about other guys on that defense. He was the marked guy on that defense. Wright missed most of 2015 with knee and foot injuries. Reportedly, NFL teams worry that he's stiff and not athletic enough. His measurables at the Combine were at best average. But I wouldn't bet against his instincts and toughness, and he does have some explosiveness as an athlete as evidenced by a 35-inch vertical. There were also similar knocks on another ultra-productive college LB named Zach Thomas. He lasted until the fifth round and went on to play in seven Pro Bowls and make the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s."

Arizona vs. ASU baseball recap: Wildcats defeat Sun Devils 8-0 behind Kevin Ginkel gem

What a performance to even the season series

The first time the Arizona Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils met on the diamond this year, UA's starting pitcher failed to record an out.

This time, UA's starter failed to allow a baserunner for the first six innings. The Wildcats would go on to win the game 8-0, improving their record to 27-14 on the year.

Kevin Ginkel, a twice-drafted junior RHP, had a perfect game through six innings against ASU.

"Absolutely," Ginkel said if he knew he was perfect through the first two-thirds of the game. "I think the more it went on, I got a little nervous, but wasn't trying to think about it too much. As a pitcher, you want to maintain the same focus and go out and complete your task, be aggressive, and be around the zone."

"Once you do that as a pitcher, you're going to be successful anywhere you play."

The six innings of perfect baseball was the longest Ginkel has ever gone without allowing a baserunner.

"I don't think too many people have perfect games in the balance like that," he explained. "It was awesome. I just made one mistake with a ball down the middle."

That mistake was the first Sun Devil hit, a comebacker by Andrew Snow that bounced off Ginkel's glove and into center field to lead off the seventh.

"Hats off to him," continued Arizona's pitcher. "It was a good AB."

"It was coming in kind of hot," Ginkel said of the play. "It got my glove, but it was just a second late. As a pitcher for me, it was kind of disappointing, but at the same time, you're out there doing your job, trying to be the best you can be, and it was definitely awesome how this outing went."

Snow would be erased on a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play to end the 7th, keeping Ginkel's status of facing the minimum intact.

"I had good fastball velocity today," Ginkel explained of his success. Pac-12 Networks had him touching 97 MPH on the radar gun at one point. "I was just working the ball in and out, and I'd throw a couple changeups in there to keep 'em honest, and my slider, I spiked a couple, but I think it was a good two-strike pitch."

The second and final hit for ASU came in the 9th, giving Ginkel a two-hit shutout. He only needed 91 pitches to do the deed, striking out seven Sun Devils along the way.

"I'm just really happy with tonight. It was awesome."

"It was pretty good," Ginkel joked about having ice dumped on him. "I kind of had a feeling it was going to happen, but I wasn't expecting it. It was a little refreshing. I was kind of getting hot the more the game went on."

Arizona recorded a ton of hits on the night...16 to be exact. The team went 8-for-26 with runners on base.

But with Ginkel's performance, they didn't need a ton of runs anyway.

It started with a Ryan Aguilar RBI single in the first, bringing Zach Gibbons around to score.

ASU pitcher Reagan Todd would keep the Wildcats at bay for the next couple innings.

Then the fourth happened, and Arizona decided to put the game out of reach early.

JJ Matijevic, after a baserunning blunder earlier in the game, hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it 2-0.

James Ryan took over for Todd with one out in the fourth. The first batter he faced was Louis Boyd. The Canadian added an RBI single of his own, welcoming Ryan into the game in a very rude way.

In the next inning, Arizona kept the offensive firepower going, but this time it was a familiar name that's been struggling.

Bobby Dalbec blasted one to dead center, sailing the baseball out towards the Phoenix Zoo, giving the Wildcats a big 5-0 lead at the halfway point.

Arizona's sixth run of the night came on a Dalbec strikeout of all things. With two down in the top half of the eighth, ASU pitcher Fitz Stadler struck out the slugger with a breaking ball in the dirt, but the catcher's throw was away from the bag, allowing Dalbec to reach base safely, which also let Justin Behnke score from second (!!!).

Dalbec eventually scored after stealing a base, a single, and a ball off the pitcher's glove.

The 8th Arizona run of the game came in garbage time in the 9th.

The Wildcats continue their seven-game road trip Thursday night when they head to Los Angeles to face the USC Trojans. That game is scheduled to start at 7 PM PT, and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.

Steve Kerr named NBA Coach of the Year, Lute Olson shows up to presentation

The Arizona ties run deep

On Tuesday, the NBA announced their Coach of the Year, and that honor went to Golden State Warriors head coach and former Arizona Wildcats player Steve Kerr.

The Warriors set the regular season record for wins with 73. However, Kerr was not on the bench for all of them as he recovered from back surgery complications. The first 43 games were led by another former Wildcat, Luke Walton. Walton actually received one second-place and two third-place votes.

Kerr said that he'd be willing to saw his trophy in half and share it with Walton.

With his early season success, we've seen Walton's name come up as a potential guy to take over the Los Angeles Lakers opening. His name's also come up with the Knicks, given his connection with Phil Jackson.

To add to the total Arizona takeover of the NBA Coach of the Year ceremony, Kerr's college coach Lute Olson showed up:

As Arizona's motto goes: Past. Present. Future. Nothing embodies that quite like what happened at this particular ceremony.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona and BYU share QB questions ahead of 2016 opener

Who will be playing behind center for both of these teams?

As the Arizona Wildcats continue on a crash course with the BYU Cougars to open the 2016 season, one similar question faces both squads. Our friend Kyle Kensing wrote about five quarterback battles this offseason, and both Arizona and BYU appear. BYU's situation is a little different, since Taysom Hill and Tanner Mangum have significant experience, while Anu Solomon has a significant edge on Brandon Dawkins in that department. Hill and Solomon share an injury-riddled past, though Hill's is a little more lengthy. It's going to be a big non-conference game a little more than four months from now, but there are questions at the most important position for both teams

Arizona basketball: Wildcats add Lipscomb graduate transfer Talbott Denny

A Tucson kid is coming home

Talbott Denny played his high school basketball at Salpointe High School, which happens to be less than a mile away from the main campus of the University of Arizona.

After four years at Lipscomb, Denny will finish his college career where it all started, as he announced he is signing with the Arizona Wildcats as a graduate transfer.

Denny missed his senior season at Lipscomb due to a shoulder labrum tear he suffered in fall practice. The last season he did play, he averaged just a touch under six points per game, but this is more of Arizona having an excess of scholarships for next year more than anything. He also seems to be choosing the idea of coming home over going to a lesser program where he would get more minutes.

When news started circulating that Sean Miller was at least throwing around the idea of offering Denny, our own Ryan Kelapire wrote this, which basically sums up the entire situation:

"As far as what Denny would offer the Wildcats, it wouldn't be a ton -- as in, he's not going to start or have a major role -- but he could prove to be a serviceable addition to the team's depth."

The move is a win-win on both sides. Denny gets to come home, and gets a final send-off in Tucson. Arizona gets a serviceable practice player, adding a 6-foot-6 player to go up against the loaded starting lineup every day.

Miller still needs to add front court depth. Arizona is in the mix for UNLV grad transfer Ben Carter, among others. There are plenty of guards now. The team even added walk-on Jake DesJardins on Monday as well, who is another shooting guard.

Either way, let's welcome Talbott home, and you know that Senior Day ceremony will be quite emotional for him and his family.

Arizona baseball: Three Up, Three Down: Wildcats sweep Cal

Don't look now, but here come the Wildcats

As the Pac-12 continues to remain the ultimate bizarro world in a lot of sports, the Arizona Wildcats became the first baseball team to reach ten conference wins after sweeping the California Golden Bears in Berkeley this weekend.

The weekend started out with a nice and tidy 3-0 shutout. Then things got weird. A 13 inning, break-out-the-rule-book type of game was decided with a Ryan Aguilar home run that he was jammed on in reality, giving Arizona a hard-fought, 8-5 win. Then on Sunday, the two teams traded five-run innings in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth, resulting in a 7-6 Wildcats win to get the sweep.

Plenty of guys performed well, and there are a lot of positives that came out of the weekend heading into this last month of conference play. Here's a look at the best, plus some guys who maybe didn't have the weekend they were looking for individually:

Three Up:

1. Zach Gibbons

This is a team being led by its seniors right now, and Gibbons is at the forefront. The right fielder was 7-for-11 with four walks. Like, what is that? He also drove in three runs, and scored twice. The best part about Gibbons is that he's a two-out machine. And he's going to be in the hunt for the Pac-12 batting title, and will start climbing the top ten on Arizona's all-time hit leader list. This is his world right now, and we're just living in it.

2. Nathan Bannister

It could also be Bannister's world. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in his first career shutout. He's starting to miss a lot more bats than he used to, which is a development that Arizona fans and MLB scouts should love. He scattered three hits and three walks in his nine scoreless innings. Over his last 26 innings, he has allowed just one run and 11 hits.

3. Louis Boyd

Arizona needed a new name to step up in the order this weekend, and that guy turned out to be Boyd. The SS/3B went 6-for-12 at the plate, walked four times, scored four times, and picked up a couple RBI. He was just 2-of-37 in conference play prior to this weekend, so that's a huge step up, and a much-needed one as Arizona continues to search for the best defensive/offensive combo.

Three Down:

1. Alfonso Rivas

As the DH in the first two games of the series, the star freshman was just 1-for-8 against the Cal pitching staff, and stranded a couple runners on base. As a relief pitcher in the finale, six of the 13 batters he faced reached base. He only threw 22 of his 43 pitches for strikes. He got it together for the ninth inning though, retiring the side in order, and getting credit for the win.

2. JJ Matijevic

Just when we thought Matijevic was turning the corner, he put up a 1-for-10 mark at the plate this weekend, struck out four times, and stranded nine runners on base. I still think he'll be a force down the stretch, but this was a pretty big bump in the road.

3. Ryan Haug

Haug started every game behind the plate, which makes you wonder if Cesar Salazar is struggling with his injury, especially since Haug caught all 13 innings Saturday night, then was right back out there on Sunday. Unfortunately, Haug was 2-for-13, and struck out five times. The catching situation is at least a little bit interesting right now.

Arizona returns to action on Tuesday night with a single game at Arizona State. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM on Pac-12 Arizona. Then the Wildcats will head to L.A. for three games against USC Thursday-Saturday, all being broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Andre Iguodala scores 22 in Golden State's Game Four win

Gettin Iggy with it

The big news to come out of the Golden State Warriors game on Sunday was probably that Steph Curry hurt his knee and missed the second half. But, to focus on the Arizona part of the Warriors, Andre Iguodala had himself a big game, which is becoming the postseason norm for him. He dropped 22 points, and as the guys at Golden State of Mind put it: "Andre Iguodala's play in the postseason remains timely and awe-inspiring." Jason Terry scored nine points for the Rockets

- In the East, Richard Jefferson scored five points for the Cavaliers, while Channing Frye played nine scoreless, not very productive minutes

- In Pac-12 news, Ivan Rabb has decided he will return for his sophomore season at Cal. This conference will still be interesting next year

- It's time for the Pac-12 to reconsider its TV vision
