Tucson native Carli Campbell to transfer from Arizona softball

Arizona softball outfielder and Tucson native Carli Campbell has entered the transfer portal, sources confirmed on Saturday. The news was first reported by Justin’s World of Softball.

The redshirt junior hit .275 in three seasons with the Wildcats, and was a key member of the 2019 Women’s College World Series team, starting in 24 games, including the final 15 of the season.

The left-handed slapper hit .242 that season and .300 in 2018 in 120 at-bats. Campbell appeared in 18 games in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, but only logged seven at-bats, losing playing time to freshmen Bella Dayton and Janelle Meono. as well as juniors Jenna Kean and Peanut Martinez.

With soon-to-be sixth-year senior Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza planning to return for another season and the Wildcats adding the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, it would have been even more difficult for Campbell to earn playing time moving forward.

Before Campbell joined Arizona as a walk-on in 2017, which she said was a “dream come true,” she was an all-state player at nearby Canyon del Oro High School. Assuming she is on track to graduate from the UA in May, Campbell can use her softball skills to help her cover the cost of grad school. She has two years of eligibility left.

Campbell is majoring in business administration and psychology, and her school-produced bio says she hopes to be an entrepreneur one day.

As of now, Campbell is the only Wildcat in the transfer portal, though others could follow since Arizona will have an unusually large roster next season after the NCAA granted all spring student-athletes an extra year of eligibility.

Arizona is hoping to return all six of its seniors, though nothing is set in stone yet.
