Long Beach State transfer Joshua Morgan picks USC over Arizona, others

One fewer frontcourt option for the Wildcats

For the second day in a row, an LA school beat out the Arizona Wildcats for a highly coveted transfer, as Long Beach State’s Joshua Morgan committed to USC on Friday.

Morgan, a 6-foot-11 center from Sacramento, earned Big West Defensive Player of the Year honors as a freshman after averaging 8.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

Morgan recorded 10 points and five rebounds against the Wildcats in Tucson last November. He also posted double figures in scoring versus UCLA and USC.

Morgan chose to play at Long Beach State despite being ranked the 174th-best prospect in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Morgan, as of now, has to sit out a year before having three years of eligibility with the Trojans. However, the NCAA is considering implementing a new rule that would allow players to transfer one time without having to sit out a year.

The NCAA will vote on that later this spring and, if passed, could be implemented immediately, allowing Morgan to suit up for the Trojans as early as 2020-21.

In that case, landing Morgan would have a been a huge coup for the Wildcats, whose frontcourt only consists of Christian Koloko, Ira Lee and Jordan Brown at the moment.

Arizona’s other frontcourt target so far is Purdue big man Matt Haarms, who will be narrowing his list of finalists to 10 on Saturday.
