Report: Khalil Tate returning to Arizona for senior season

It’s National Signing Day, when top high school and junior college recruits finalize decisions that will impact their next several years. The Arizona Wildcats have put together a pretty solid class, which has included a few surprise additions.

But maybe Arizona’s most important commitment, at least for 2019, is quarterback Khalil Tate, who according to Michael Lev of the Arizona Daily Star plans to return for his senior season.

“Tate and his parents spoke with Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin on Tuesday,” Lev wrote. “They collectively concluded that Tate’s best move would be to return in 2019 and work to improve his game.”

Rumors had been circulating that Tate would leave after an up-and-down 2018, one that saw him all but stop using the running ability that caused him to burst onto the national scene the year before. Instead he became a pocket passer, and a fairly good one overall, throwing for 2,530 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Potential options for Tate, had he left, were either to transfer to another program—possibly as a graduate transfer, if he graduated before next season—or enter the NFL Draft.

Tate may not be guaranteed the starting job for his senior year, however. Among Arizona’s signees on Wednesday was 3-star passer Grant Gunnell. Gunnell is the prototypical QB for offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone’s system, a system that Tate took time growing into over the course of last season.
