Florida Gulf Coast grad transfer Zach Johnson to visit Arizona

The 6-foot-2 All-Atlantic Sun guard will also visit Miami (FL), Creighton, and Louisville

Florida Gulf Coast graduate transfer Zach Johnson will visit the Arizona Wildcats on April 22, according to Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports.

The 6-foot-2 All-Atlantic Sun guard averaged 16.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists this past season. He has one year of eligibility and can play immediately.

Johnson will also visit Miami (FL), Creighton, and Louisville, per Rothstein.

Johnson posted very efficient scoring numbers this season, shooting 47 percent from the field, 39 percent from 3, and 78 percent from the charity stripe.

He scored 37 points in the Atlantic Sun title game which FGCU lost to Lipscomb. Johnson also posted 23 points on 19 shots against Oklahoma State in the NIT.

Johnson averaged 32.4 minutes per game and exclusively played the 2, per KenPom. That makes him an odd fit at Arizona since the Wildcats already have Dylan Smith, Brandon Randolph, and Devonaire Doutrive at the two-guard spot.

And Johnson tallied 104 assists to 79 turnovers, so he doesn’t appear to be someone who can play point guard effectively, which is Arizona’s biggest position of need.

Johnson averaged 2.0 steals per game this past season, but FGCU’s defense was worse when he was on the court.

The Eagles allowed 98.0 points per 100 possessions this season, but 98.8 when Johnson played. He had a defensive box plus/minus of 0.3 which was one of the lowest among FGCU’s rotation players.

Still, Arizona has six open scholarship slots, so it can’t afford to be super choosy with who it adds.

And Johnson is viewed as one of the top grad transfers on the market and, at minimum, would add much-needed 3-point shooting.
