Sean Miller not a candidate for Pitt’s head coaching position
The Arizona coach won’t be returning to his alma mater
Arizona Wildcats coach Sean Miller said in a statement Wednesday that he is not a candidate for the Pittsburgh Panthers’ head coaching job.
“I am not a candidate for the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball head coaching vacancy,” he said. “I wish them well in their search for a new coach.”
This comes a day after Pittsburgh Sports Now reported Miller had interest in the job and had even reached out to Pitt through intermediaries to express his interest.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had a similar report, saying that Miller and Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke discussed the position.
ESPN’s Jeff Goodman also said that he believes Miller would leave for Pitt if Pitt would take him.
But this is the second time Miller has squashed any rumors of a potential return to his alma mater.
Two years ago, Miller was thought to be a candidate at Pitt after Jamie Dixon left for TCU but then he released this statement to shut down that idea:
“I wish them luck replacing Jamie Dixon, a tremendous coach and person, who did an incredible job in his time there. I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for the University and the city of Pittsburgh. My memories and friendships from my time as a student athlete are the best and strongest of my lifetime. However, I have one of the great jobs in college basketball at Arizona.”
