Mark Cuban says Brandon Ashley has a ‘real shot’ at making Dallas Mavericks’ roster

Dallas’ owner has been impressed by the former Wildcat

Brandon Ashley has strung together two notable performances with the Dallas Mavericks in Las Vegas Summer League, and people are taking notice.

One of those people owns the team.

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Sunday that Ashley “has a real shot at making the team.”

On Saturday, the former Arizona Wildcat scored 21 points in 20 minutes in Dallas’ Las Vegas Summer League opener, then followed that up with 12 points and two rebounds in 18 minutes against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

Ashley is shooting 13 of 22 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3 in two games in Vegas.

Last week, Ashley averaged 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds with the Mavericks in Orlando Summer League.

This is Ashley’s second stint with Dallas. He signed with the Mavericks in July 2015 after playing for the Atlanta Hawks in Summer League that year.

Ashley spent training camp and preseason with Dallas before being waived prior to the start of the regular season. He then played for the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ G League team.

In 2016, Ashley played for Dallas’ Orlando Summer League team.

Cuban said the Mavericks are rebuilding, and even though they just re-signed veteran Dirk Nowitzki, their only backup power forwards are former Stanford standout Dwight Powell and 30-year-old Josh McRoberts.

So when Las Vegas Summer League ends July 17, it would not be surprising to see the Mavericks extend a training camp offer to Ashley.
