2017 MLB Draft results: Arizona SS Louis Boyd drafted in 24th round by the Seattle Mariners

Joining old buddy Nathan Bannister

For the second consecutive year, the Seattle Mariners have drafted an Arizona Wildcat in the 24th round.

Last year, it was Trey Griffey in a way to honor Ken Griffey Jr., but this year, they drafted an actually baseball player and Vancouver native in shortstop Louis Boyd.

The Mariners also selected Nathan Bannister last year, so this is another Arizona senior that they pegged with a late-round pick.

Boyd, who hit .265 in his senior campaign, missed about a month in the early part of the season after tearing the UCL in his non-throwing elbow on a blooped fly ball to left field.

He returned ahead of schedule — with a massive elbow brace on — and provided an instant leadership spark to a team that needed it at the time.

In his final at bat, Boyd smacked his first career home run with Arizona, which he would end up calling the most bittersweet moment of his life.

Boyd’s a great guy, and hopefully we’ll see him playing short behind Bannister sometime in the near future.
