2017 MLB Draft results: Arizona LHP Rio Gomez selected in 36th round by Boston Red Sox

The junior has the option to go pro

The sixth and final Arizona Wildcat player selected in the 2017 MLB Draft was Rio Gomez. The junior lefty was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 36th round.

Gomez will now have the option to start professional baseball this summer, or he could still spend one more season in Tucson.

In 2017, the son of noted ESPN reporter Pedro Gomez posted an ERA of 4.82 in 52 ¹⁄₃ innings of work. He began the season as a starter, and then he was moved into the bullpen and became a semi-left handed specialist. Rio appeared in 20 games (11 starts), finishing with a 5-6 record.

Just based on draft position, it seems like it would be more likely than not that Rio will return to Tucson this year and try and improve on what he’s done over the last year. Prior to 2017, he had only pitched in a total of 37 ²⁄₃ innings for Arizona. He could possibly use another year of increased workload before heading off to pro ball, or he could serve as a valuable left-handed arm in the Red Sox farm system moving forward.
