Arizona baseball: Jay Johnson recalls Omaha trip last year with Nevada

It’s his first CWS, but not his first time playing in Omaha

Even though this is Jay Johnson’s first appearance in the College World Series as a coach, it won't be the first time that he has coached a team late in the year in TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

"I actually had a unique experience," he explained. "We took our team at Nevada there in May. It was a bye weekend for us and a bye weekend for Creighton."

The Wolf Pack won those games by scores of 5-4 and 4-0 last year.

"I wanted to go there worse than I could imagine before that," he continued. "And then when we walked into that stadium and walked out I was like ‘There’s no way I’m not going to make this somehow, someway happen."

"I didn’t know it was going to be at Arizona, but I can’t wait to get back and be apart of it."

Nevada and Creighton didn't play in front of small crowds those two days either. The first game had an attendance of 2,699 and the second one had a whopping 10,302 people there.

"It was like a Military Appreciation Day," Johnson explained of the big crowd. "I think that was part of it. The sun was shining, it was a beautiful day, the community was into it, and to win both those games we were out there was pretty cool."

Let’s hope that Johnson can keep that undefeated record in that stadium intact as he looks to guide the Arizona Wildcats to their fifth National Championship in program history over the next couple of weeks.
