Arizona football recruiting: Breaking down 3-star safety commit London Iakopo

Another big time JuCo product for Arizona

Arizona has now landed six recruits since Saturday, this time adding another safety in London Iakopo. A three-star safety out of Long Beach City College, Iakopo will now join his current teammate and Arizona commit Josh JJ Allen. Iakopo is ranked No. 4 among all junior college safeties, and is the 51st JuCo prospect overall.

Earlier in his recruitment process, he had told me that Arizona recruited him as a preferred walk-on back in the day at Mater Dei High School. Here he is two years later, ready to take his talents to Tucson on full scholarship. He also held offers to Iowa State and Washington State.

Arizona is a good fit for Iakopo, and the defense can use him in a number of ways. He's big, yet fast enough to play any three of the safety positions, which will allow him to see the field early next season. William Parks, Jamar Allah and Anthony Lopez will all be graduating when Iakopo comes in, leaving it up to Tellas Jones and Paul Magloire as the bandit, Devon Brewer up top at free safety, with the spur wide open for the taking. This is realistically where Iakopo could fill in right away.

He's an instinctive, big hitter who is looking to take some heads off. He could be the guy Arizona looks to give that smash mouth brand of football on the defensive side of the ball. His skill set is very similar to that of Jared Tevis, where he usually makes the most of his plays coming up on the ball and reading the offense rather than dropping back into coverage.

Arizona is looking for safeties in the class and landing Iakopo definitely addresses the concern. This commitment might take 4-star safety Eric Burrell out of the mix, but I expect Arizona to still be in play for 4-star safety Brandon Burton, who could realistically play both safety or wide receiver at Arizona.

London will have two years to play at Arizona, which would give fellow Arizona commit Gavin Robertson room to grow into his own role as well.
