Arizona football recruiting: Breaking down 3-star receiver commit DeVaughn Cooper

More offensive playmakers for Arizona to look forward in a few years

The lone receiver of the 2016 Arizona Wildcats recruiting class so far, DeVaughn Cooper, was a pleasant pick up. I had talked to him a few weeks ago and he said Arizona would be an intriguing school, noting the explosive Rich Rodriguez offense. His high school teammate and fellow Arizona commit, Sean Riley, has also been recruiting him for quite some time to join him in Tucson.

The 5-11 171lb receiver out of Narbonne (Harbor City, CA), held offers to Colorado, Michigan and Washington. I had a good feeling about Cooper throughout his recruitment, but he had said Michigan was grabbing his attention lately. A commitment from Cooper was pretty likely, but maybe not this soon in the process. He's ranked No. 147 among all receivers in the nation and ranked No. 93 overall in the state of California.

Cooper has wheels and is used as a true vertical threat in the offense at Narbonne. He'll definitely be able to spread the secondary out with his speed and open up intermediate routes in the middle of the field. It doesn't matter if he's lined up outside or in the slot, Cooper can usually get by the secondary. He excels in wide receiver screens, something that has become a staple to Arizona's offense in a read-option situation. Just when you think that you have him tracked down, he can put the moves on and make defenders miss.

Samajie Grant is a great all-around receiver, showing off his speed, strength and route running abilities, but I believe that Cooper could be a great replacement for him in a few years. I'm a big fan of Cooper and skill set, and think he can excel in the offense at Arizona. With great quarterbacks coming in, including Khalil Tate, Devon Modster and Braxton Burmeister, Cooper will have no problem making plays.
