Arizona football recruiting: Breaking down 2-star safety commit Gavin Roberton

Arizona lands themselves a big time hitter in the secondary

The final commitment of the big recruiting weekend for the Arizona Wildcats came from 2-star safety Gavin Robertson. Don't let the two stars by Gavin Robterson's name fool you. The 6-2, 200lb prospect out of Auburn Mountainview (Auburn, WA) had told me Arizona was very high on his list, and I felt pretty confident Arizona would land him, it was just a matter of when.

He had offers to Hawaii, New Mexico, and Wyoming and also drew the interest of Pac-12 North schools, including Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State. Robertson is ranked 149th among all safeties in the nation and No. 23 among recruits in the state of Washington.

Gavin Robertson is a big hitting safety that attacks the ball. He possesses great play recognition and reacts fast to the ball, charging downfield to make a play. He seems to be a great potential fit for the bandit position in the secondary. He is built and plays more like a linebacker, giving him both the frame and play style as Marquis Flowers. He has that relentless attack on the field and could even be seen as a Jared Tevis type safety. Arizona has a lot of defensive backs going forward, but not too many like Robertson. If Robertson plays up top at safety, he's the guy who will be lurking downfield, waiting to put a hit on someone crossing the middle.

There are a lot of safeties in play for 2016, but Gavin Robertson is unlike the others with his big-hitting abilities and reads on the play. Eric Burrell, Brandon Burton and London Iakopo should still all be in play for Arizona, despite Robertson's commitment.
