Arizona baseball: JJ Matijevic named to Cape Cod League All-Star team

Matijevic is turning it up later on in Cape Cod play

There are fewer Arizona Wildcats participating in the Cape Cod League than normal, but JJ Matijevic is representing well, as he was named to the West All-Star team on Saturday.

Getting more reps at first base, Matijevic had been struggling, with his batting average sitting just above .200 on July 5th. But after Saturday's action, Arizona's rising sophomore now possesses a batting average of .301, which is the tenth-highest in the Cape so far.

Since July 5th, Matijevic is 16-for-35 in nine games, has four of his eight total runs driven in, and four of his seven extra base hits (three doubles and a home run). He has recorded at least one hit in each of those nine games.

This is the same kind of pattern that we saw from Matijevic throughout the spring as well. He struggled early, but then one big game turned things around for him. That one big game for him this summer was on July 6th against Brewster, where he went 3-for-3 with a walk, and was a triple shy of the cycle.

The Cape Cod All-Star Game takes place on Saturday, July 25th. Hopefully Matijevic will turn this late success and more defensive reps at first base into an extremely productive sophomore campaign for the Wildcats in 2016.

He certainly has the talent to have an enormous year for Arizona and Jay Johnson.
