Arizona baseball: A quick look at Andy Lopez' accomplishments

After fourteen years at Arizona baseball (including a national championship!), Andy Lopez is retiring.

Coach Lopez led Arizona to a 459-300-1 record (174-165 in conference) during his tenure, which stretched from 2002 to today. During the fourteen years he led Arizona baseball, the Wildcats made the NCAA tournament eight times, made the College World Series twice, and won a national championship.

Prior to coming to Arizona, Lopez was the head coach at Pepperdine (where he won a national championship in 1992) and Florida.

Importantly, Lopez made Arizona baseball a big deal again. He brought Arizona baseball back to relevance after a tough stretch from about 1994 to 2001, when the Wildcats only made one NCAA tournament in an eight-year span. He helped move the team off-campus to Hi Corbett, which has been a resounding success. And during a time when Arizona football and Arizona basketball had some struggles and close calls that made me question whether we would ever win anything significant ever again, Andy Lopez led Arizona baseball to a national championship. He will be missed.
