Two more Arizona softball players have decided to enter the transfer portal—sophomore pitcher/designated player Marissa Schuld, who announced her decision on Instagram, as well as sophomore pitcher Vanessa Foreman, according to multiple sources.
They become the fourth and fifth players to leave the program this offseason, the others being junior utility Ivy Davis and junior outfielders Carli Campbell and Jenna Kean.
Schuld, a two-time Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, hit .318/.400/.477 in 44 career at-bats with the Wildcats, including two homers. She also pitched 17.2 innings, only allowing one earned run while striking out 10.
Schuld did not play much as a freshman but was a solid contributor at designated player as a sophomore in 2020, hitting .350 with two homers, six RBI and a double. Before joining the Wildcats, Schuld had a stellar career at Phoenix’s Pinnacle High School where she owns the school records for home runs (37), RBI (177), strikeouts (617) and wins (54).
A tall lefty, Foreman pitched 9.1 innings in 2019, compiling a 3.75 ERA. She was redshirting in 2020. The Wildcats are returning seniors Alyssa Denham and Mariah Lopez in the circle, as well as No. 3 pitcher Hanah Bowen, a junior, while also adding freshmen Jessie Fontes and Devyn Netz, two top-30 recruits.
Still, the downside of returning the senior class is this: A lot of quality underclassmen are leaving the program, the ramifications of which could be felt in 2022 and beyond.
Arizona’s roster now sits at 22 players for the 2021 season.
