Arizona’s Vivian Hou named WGCA All-American and Freshman of the Year

Arizona women’s golf doesn’t rebuild, it reloads.

All the big names from the 2018 national championship team are gone, but the Wildcats are still a force to be reckoned with.

On Thursday, they had three golfers earn national honors. Freshman Vivian Hou was the headliner, being named the Women’s Golf Coaches Association Freshman of the Year and one of 11 First-Team All-Americans. She is also one of just three finalists for the ANNIKA Award, which is given to the best female collegiate golfer.

The Taipei, Taiwan native logged a stroke average of 70.68 in her freshman season. She finished in fourth place or better in six of the seven tournaments she competed in, including runner-up finishes at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, Stanford Intercollegiate and Arizona Wildcat Invitational.

Her older sister Yu-Sang Hou, a junior, was named a Second Team All-American. Sophomore Ya Chun Chang was an All-American honorable mention.

Arizona was ranked No. 11 in the country before the 2019-20 was cut short by the coronavirus crisis. Vivian Hou was the No. 4 player in the country, Yu-Sang was 18th, and Chang was 56th.
