NFL Draft has been uneventful for Arizona Wildcats recently

This year’s NFL Draft is going to be like no other, with the coronavirus pandemic turning the 3-day event into a glorified online fantasy football draft. But as far as the Arizona Wildcats are concerned, it may end up being quite similar to most drafts this decade.

Arizona has had only 15 players taken since 2010, tied with Colorado for the second-fewest among Pac-12 schools (Washington State is last, with 11). And while there are a couple former Wildcats who could hear their names called on Saturday, there’s just as much a likelihood than none will get drafted.

Just like in 2017. And 2015. And 2013.

Arizona has seen only four players drafted in the past four years, and the last two—PJ Johnson in 2019 and Dane Cruikshank in 2018—were junior college transfers. That means if running back J.J. Taylor, quarterback Khalil Tate or cornerback Jace Whittaker get drafted they would be the first players to begin their college career with the UA and go in the draft since safety Will Parks and linebacker Scooby Wright III in 2016.

Wait, it gets worse.

Taylor and Tate would be the first Arizona offensive players taken since 2014, when running back Ka’Deem Carey went in the fourth round to the Chicago Bears. Carey also happens to be the last UA alum drafted in first four rounds, while the last one to get picked before the final day—the first round is on Thursday, while rounds 2-3 are on Friday—was quarterback Nick Foles as a third-round selection in 2012.
