Arizona baseball adds 3 players for 2020 season

Think college basketball rosters go through a lot of turnover? College baseball can often make that sport look rather pedestrian in terms of player movement.

Just look at the Arizona Wildcats, who since the 2019 season ended (earlier than hoped) in late May have said good bye to eight players either via graduation or the MLB Draft. In addition, three members of the incoming recruiting class ended up signing pro contracts after being drafted, including pitcher Andrew Dalquist getting $2 million from the Chicago White Sox as a third-round pick.

Nine other players Arizona signed out of high school are still expected to be part of the 2020 roster, and joining them will be a trio of new additions that were announced Monday.

Mac Bingham and Wesley Scott will be freshmen, while Davis Vainer is a graduate transfer from Alabama.

Bingham, who had been committed to USC, was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 40^th round in June. The San Diego product hit .356 for his career at Torrey Pines High School, adding 12 home runs, and also ran for more than 3,000 yards with 44 touchdowns for the football team.

Scott, a Vanderbilt commit, withdrew his name from the MLB Draft in May and then opted not to be part of the incoming class of the program that won the College World Series last month. The right-hander from Riverside, Calif. went 6-1 with an 0.98 ERA as a senior, striking out 85 in 50 innings.

Vainer will finish his college career with the Wildcats after playing for Alabama from 2017-19. Last season the righty reliever had a 3.34 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 29.2 innings, holding opponents to a .173 batting average. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 21^st round but did not sign.

Arizona is also expected to add a transfer from Texas, infielder Bryce Reagan, who in mid-June announced on Twitter he had committed to the program, though it is unclear if he would be eligible to play immediately. Reagan hit .220 with one home run and five RBI in limited action as a freshman for the Longhorns.

The new arrivals will be expected to help Arizona get back to the NCAA tournament after a two-year absence. The Wildcats won their final 10 games in 2019 but were still left out of the 64-team field.
