Warriors to retire Andre Iguodala’s number

The Andre Iguodala Era ended in Golden State last week when the Warriors dealt the do-it-all forward to the Memphis Grizzlies, but his legacy will live on.

The team announced Sunday that it will be retiring Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey.

Iguodala, 35, spent six seasons with the Warriors, making five NBA Finals appearances and capturing three championships, including in 2015 when he was named the NBA Finals MVP.

Iguodala’s counting stats in Golden State—9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game—don’t jump off the page, but his defense and leadership qualities were invaluable to the team’s success.

“During the summer of 2013, we went through an extensive free agency process in our efforts to sign Andre Iguodala. At that time, we envisioned him becoming a vital part of a young, up-and-coming team with championship aspirations. As we look back six years later, we actually underestimated what his value would be to our team, both on the court and in the locker room,” said Warriors Co-Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob.

“In what has been well-documented, Andre sacrificed for the betterment of our team and, in one of the best stories of this journey, earned NBA Finals MVP honors in 2015. He has been absolutely vital to our success during five consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals and three championships. We thank Andre for all his contributions and look forward to seeing his number in the rafters at Chase Center.”
