Arizona soccer falls to No. 3 USC to begin Los Angeles road trip

The Arizona soccer team lost to No. 3 USC on Thursday afternoon to begin their L.A. road trip.

Ally Prisock drilled a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and Natalie Jacobs knocked in a cross at the far post in the 49th minute to lead the Trojans to a painless 2-0 victory.

USC outshot Arizona 22-5. The Wildcats had four corner kicks but only two shots on goal. The first came in the ninth minute when a powerful shot by Jill Aguilera was saved by Kaylie Collins.

The second came in the 65th minute when Kelcey Cavarra rolled a free kick to Collins, who scooped it up with ease. Cavarra had another attempt in the 88th minute, but her shot went wide.

It is Arizona’s third time being shut out this season, the others coming against Albany and No. 1 Stanford. UA goalkeeper Lainey Burdett tallied eight saves.

The Wildcats fall to 8-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Pac-12. They resume conference play Sunday at No. 13 UCLA in Pasadena.

Arizona is 1-22-1 all-time against UCLA, though they tied last year in Tucson. TopDrawerSoccer listed Sunday’s rematch as one of the five best games to watch this weekend.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks.

Arizona was without starting defender Sabrina Enciso against USC. The sophomore, who had started every game this season, traveled with the team, but UA head coach Tony Amato did not seem optimistic that she would play this weekend.
