Omar Thielemans shows off smooth jumper in late-night workout

Looks like his jump shot is developing nicely

Not much is known about Arizona Wildcats freshman Omar Thielemans.

When the 6-foot-6 Belgian committed to the UA in April, he was so off-the-radar that he didn’t have a profile on major scouting services like 247Sports and Rivals.

Eventually, evaluators took a look at him and gave him a four-star rating.

“He’s a plus athlete for a wing with good size and pretty long arms,” wrote Josh Gerson of 247Sports. “While Thielemans’ physical makeup makes him really intriguing, his best asset may be his vision, as he’s a terrific passer for the position with a high level feel for the game. He’ll need to keep improving as a shooter, as many of his points come from driving or on putbacks.”

Thielemans must have heard that last part, because his jumper is looking pretty smooth these days. Here’s video of him draining 13 of 15 3-pointers late on a Saturday night in Richard Jefferson Gymnasium:

Thielemans (pronounced tilly-mons) played for BC Ostend in Belgium last season, and is considered a long-term project rather than an immediate impact player.

But if he is shooting like that and then can use his length and athleticism to cause some havoc on defense, there is no reason why he can’t crack UA’s rotation — which is a mystery itself — sooner rather than later.

“His best days are in front of him. They’re not now,” Arizona head coach Sean Miller said in May. “His development over the next couple years will be crucial to our program and in his career, but there’s a lot to work with.”
