Second former Aggie added to Wildcats roster

Robert Congel must wait a little longer to find out if he’ll be eligible to play for the Arizona Wildcats this season after transferring from Texas A&M. But at least he knows the position he’ll be playing if able to get on the field this fall.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Congel has spent the bulk of Arizona’s first two practices working at center, where he would serve as backup to third-year starter Nathan Eldridge if he’s eligible to play in 2018.

“We’re playing him at center, which really helps us because it means that we don’t have to subtract from one of the other positions to fill the center spot,” offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said Saturday. “So it gives us more depth. It gives us a little more flexibility at our tackle spot.”

Congel, part of Kevin Sumlin’s final freshman class at Texas A&M, redshirted in 2017 as a walk-on before opting to transfer in the late spring. Arizona is waiting to hear from the NCAA if he’ll be eligible for this season or, like scholarship football players who transfer, he’ll have to sit a year.

A second former Texas A&M player was added to the team over the weekend in the former of redshirt freshman linebacker Santino Marchiol. Marchiol, a former 4-star prospect who was considered the No. 17 inside linebacker in the 2017 recruiting class, most likely will need to sit out the 2018 season.
