Ex-Arizona WR/CB Cam Denson to finish career at NAU

The former Salpointe standout will play for the Lumberjacks this season

After an up-and-down career with the Arizona Wildcats, Tucson native Cam Denson will spend his last season of college football in Flagstaff with the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.

Denson was recently added to NAU’s roster and is listed as a wide receiver and graduate student.

The former Salpointe Catholic standout only appeared in one game at Arizona last year, as his season was ended prematurely by a foot injury. He caught one pass for five yards.

Then-UA head coach Rich Rodriguez said Denson would be medically retiring from football.

Denson was a four-star recruit out of high school, garnering offers from Oklahoma, Notre Dame, UCLA and Washington. He was the No. 15 cornerback in the country.

It was considered a big coup when the Wildcats landed him, and he made an immediate impact at the UA, intercepting two passes as a true freshman in 2014.

But Denson did not quite progress as hoped in 2015, which led to him to move to wide receiver for his junior season. In 2016, Denson played in all 12 games (three starts) and tallied 15 receptions for 242 yards and two touchdowns.

He was viewed as a breakout candidate heading into the 2017 season, but he was never healthy enough to make an impact.

The good news is that he was able to obtain a fifth year of eligibility, and it will be interesting to see how he fares with the Lumberjacks, who have an All-Big Sky quarterback in Case Cookus.
