A look at Arizona’s newest offers (defense)

The ‘Cats sent out offers across three classes this week

The Arizona Wildcats are continuing to hit the road and check in on prospects and adding new ones to their board.

The ‘Cats are looking not only to continue adding to the 2019 class, but they are looking to the future as well. This past week the UA added multiple 2020 and even a 2021 prospect to their board.

Let’s take a look at Arizona’s newest targets on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive Line

Gabriel Hall

Class: 2019

Position: Defensive Tackle

Ranking: 3-star, 627th nationally, 46th ranked DT (247Sports)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-5, 280 pounds

School/Hometown: Waller High School/Waller, TX

2017 Stats: Unavailable

Offers: Arizona, Baylor, Houston, Nebraska, Ole Miss, San Diego State, SMU, TCU, Texas State, Texas Tech, Tulane, Tulsa, Utah

Notes: Hall is an aggressive lineman who pursues the ball carrier relentlessly. He isn’t the biggest player but he does a great job of shedding blocks and causing mayhem in the backfield. He plays with a high motor. That shows when a play moves behind him, he chases down the ball carrier, and makes the play. Hall flew a little under the radar at first but is now garnering more attention and his play is the reason why.

Maceal Afaese

Class: 2020

Position: Weakside Defensive End

Ranking: Unranked by 247Sports

Height/Weight: 6-foot-5, 230 pounds

School/Hometown: Kapolei High School/Kapolei, HI

2017 Stats: Unavailable

Offers: Arizona

Notes: There is not much out there on Afaese but Iona Uiagalelei wouldn’t have offered if he didn’t see something he liked. Afaese does have the type of size colleges are looking for, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts landing more offers sooner than later.

Linebackers

John Ward

Class: 2019

Ranking: 3-star, 941st nationally, 73rd ranked OLB (247Sports)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 235 pounds

School/Hometown: Palmdale High School/Palmdale, CA

2017 Stats (10 games): 51 tackles, 10.0 TFL, 1 INT, 1 PBU

Offers: Arizona, Arizona State, Air Force, Army, Boise State, California, Colorado, Dartmouth, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, San Diego State, Utah, Utah State, Washington State, Yale

Notes: First things first, the title of his junior highlights....”Best 7 Minutes of Your Life.” That shows you the confidence he has. And that’s not a bad thing for a linebacker. He is aggressive and has solid tackling technique. And he’s a hard hitter. His recruitment has taken off this spring and is one of the hottest prospects in Southern California.

Cornerbacks

Makell Esteen

Class: 2020

Ranking: 3-star, 381st nationally, 26th ranked CB (247Sports)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 170 pounds

School/Hometown: Lawndale High School/Lawndale, CA

2017 Stats (12 games): 51 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 7 INT, 15 PBU

Offers: Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, USC, Utah, Utah State, Washington

Notes: Esteen is an outstanding cover corner, whether he’s playing man or zone. He has a knack for making plays on the ball and has 11 INTs and 27 PBUs in only 25 games played. He has wonderful awareness and plays aggressive. He’s going to have his pick of schools when all is said-and-done but Arizona has plenty of time to stay involved.

Safeties

Jacobe Covington

Class: 2020

Ranking: 3-star, 345th nationally, 18th ranked S (247Sports)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 180 pounds

School/Hometown: Saguaro High School/Scottsdale, AZ

2017 Stats: Unable to find any

Offers: Arizona, Oregon, Tennessee

Notes: Covington is a solid coverage safety who likes to hit. He plays extremely physical and can deliver punishing blows to the ball carrier. He is aggressive and does a phenomenal job playing the run and pursuing the ball carrier. He is a player to watch as his recruitment plays out.

Athlete

Trey Paster

Class: 2020

Ranking: 3-star, 313th nationally, 24th ranked ATH (247Sports)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 185 pounds

School/Hometown: Buhach Colony High School/Atwater, CA

2017 Stats (4 games): 13 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1 INT, 1 PBU

Offers: Arizona, Nevada

Notes: Paster projects more as a cornerback rather than a receiver at the next level. He is a rangy, big player whose long arms allow him to no only disrupt the receiver, but also make plays on the ball. He only played in four games as a sophomore but expect him to have a breakout season this year.
