Arizona softball swept by No. 1 Washington

The Wildcats only had one hit in Sunday’s loss

Taran Alvelo threw a one-hit shutout as No. 1 Washington beat No. 9 Arizona 2-0 on Sunday to complete the sweep of the visiting Wildcats.

The UW right-hander struck out eight and UA’s only hit was a single by Ashleigh Hughes in the first. Alvelo retired 20 in a row after that, with only six balls leaving the infield.

Taylor McQuillin got the nod for the Wildcats, and she surrendered two runs on four hits.

Noelle Hee homered to put Washington up 1-0 in the second, then Kirstyn Thomas doubled home Sis Bates in the fourth.

Arizona falls to 24-6 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-12. Washington improves to 33-2 and 4-2, respectively.

It was a tough weekend for the Wildcats who led late in games one and two of the series before surrendering the lead and losing in walk-off fashion.

Arizona will try to bounce back next week when it hosts the California Golden Bears.
