Trevor Hoffman elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

The former Arizona Wildcat will be enshrined this summer

One-time Arizona Wildcats shortstop Trevor Hoffman is Cooperstown-bound.

The legendary San Diego Padres closer was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday after receiving 79.9% of the vote. 75% is required for enshrinement.

Hoffman will be one of four members of the 2018 HOF Class. He’ll be joined by Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, and Jim Thome. Jack Morris and Alan Trammel were also elected by the Modern Baseball Era Committee last month.

An 11th round draft pick in the 1989 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, Hoffman made his MLB debut on April 6, 1993 as a member of the Florida Marlins after being selected in the expansion draft. He faced one batter in that game, and it was a six-pitch strikeout of Los Angeles Dodgers LF Eric Davis.

On June 24, 1993, Hoffman was traded to the Padres with two other players for Rich Rodriguez (no really) and Gary Sheffield.

Hoffman went on to record 552 saves with the Padres, and finished with 601 in his career, which is second all-time behind Mariano Rivera. His 856 games finished is also second all-time behind Rivera.

This is the first Arizona alum to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The enshrinement ceremonies will take place in Cooperstown, NY July 27-30 with the actual enshrinement happening on Sunday, July 29th.
