Arizona football recruiting: Wildcats pick up a local commit and host a grad transfer lineman

It was a busy week for the Wildcats

The Arizona Wildcats had another busy week on the recruiting front as they hosted a grad transfer and landed their second commitment of the current class.

Let’s take a look at that and more in this week’s SitRep.

Issaiah Johnson

The 3-star Los Alamitos, California standout recently took a trip to Tucson at the beginning of March. He came away with an offer and a great feel for the ‘Cats. He stays in regular contact with the staff, mainly his lead recruiter Scott Boone.

Johnson does have high interest in Arizona but does not have a favorite school as of yet. He does want to take other visits but doesn’t know where he wants to travel to. He does not have a commitment date set. Johnson had a great junior season. He finished with 140 tackles, 8.0 TFL, 6.0 sacks, and an interception.

Gaelin Elmore

Elmore announced his transfer from the University of Minnesota in late March after he graduates. Arizona didn’t waste too much time, offering him earlier in the week. Elmore was supposed to visit Oklahoma this weekend but ended up making his way to Tucson for an official visit before heading to South Carolina.

At 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds, Elmore would add some needed length along the defensive line. His four years of college experience is always a plus as well. It’ll be interesting to see where things go now that he’s been on campus.

David Watson

Perhaps the biggest news this weekend was Arizona’s second commitment of the 2018 class. David Watson — a local and legacy recruit — gave the Wildcats his pledge on Saturday. This is one commitment the Wildcats won’t have to worry about.

Watson is a Wildcat through-and-through. His father, David Sr., played offensive guard for the ‘Cats in the 90s. His mother, Laura Espinoza, was a three-time All-American shortstop for the Arizona softball team.

Watson, who is 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds, will add size along the offensive line. He has great upside and is an extremely strong tackle. He is going to be a force throughout his college career.
