Arizona softball: Wildcats continue onslaught of Stanford with 12-0 win

This isn’t a fair series

After pummeling the Stanford Cardinal 20-1 on Friday with the help of seven homers, the Arizona Wildcats continued their dominance Saturday, using another powerful offensive performance to run-rule the Cardinal 12-0 in five innings.

This time the fourth-ranked Wildcats launched four homers and tallied 12 hits as Taylor McQuillin picked up her 13th win of the season, tossing four scoreless innings. Michelle Floyd pitched the fifth inning.

McQuillin’s ERA improves to 0.68, the fifth-best mark in the country (UA’s Danielle O’Toole is sixth with a 0.72 ERA).

Arizona, which has won 24 games in a row, becomes the first team since 2004 to win 39 of its first 40 games.

Behind a three-run homer from Mo Mercado in the first inning and a grand slam by Dejah Mulipola in the second inning, Arizona quickly grabbed a 7-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the Cardinal only mustered three hits and two walks off McQuillin through four innings and the Wildcats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put them up 12-0.

Katiyana Mauga hit a solo homer while Ashleigh Hughes had an RBI double and Mandie Perez added a two-run double.

For Mauga, her fourth-inning blast was her 81st career homer, putting her six homers shy of tying the UA’s all-time record.

As a team, the Wildcats are the nation’s leader in home runs (65) and have four players with 10 home runs or more this season.

Arizona (39-1, 11-0 Pac-12) will go for the sweep of Stanford (16-18, 0-11 Pac-12) on Sunday. First pitch at Hillenbrand Stadium is set for 12 p.m., and it will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
