Arizona basketball: Rawle Alkins declares for 2017 NBA Draft without hiring agent

Alkins becomes the fourth Wildcat to declare for the 2017 NBA Draft

The Arizona Wildcats’ roster is likely going to look significantly different next season.

On Wednesday, Rawle Alkins declared for the 2017 NBA Draft, becoming the fourth Wildcat to do so this offseason.

The freshman guard announced that he will initially not be hiring an agent, though, which leaves the door open to a potential return to Arizona.

Alkins is not projected to be selected in the 2017 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com, because it has him being selected 47th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Should Alkins stick in the 2017 NBA Draft, he would likely have a second-round projection.

The New York native was one of Arizona’s most consistent players this past season, averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3.

He started in every game but one for Arizona and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman First Team.

Alkins was a fan favorite in Tucson and also created the “Savage Life” movement, which became a motto for the Wildcats down the final stretch of the season.

If Alkins returns for a second season, he would presumably continue to be a key cog for the Wildcats, plus have the chance to take on a bigger role and improve his numbers along the way.

Still, as Alkins stated on Twitter, he wants to make sure he is making “the right decision” about his NBA future, and staying in the draft could be that if he gets a guarantee to be a second-round pick.

Alkins has until May 24 to decide whether he’ll remain in the draft or not. The same is true for Chance Comanche, who declared for the draft earlier in the month but has not hired an agent.

Kobi Simmons and Lauri Markkanen both hired agents, so they cannot return to Arizona.

Allonzo Trier is still weighing his options.
