Arizona softball: Wildcats ranked No. 1 in two national polls

Some polls have the Wildcats as the No. 1 team in the country

The best team in college softball resides in Tucson, according to two national polls.

The USA Softball/ESPN.com poll and the Fastpitch News poll rank the Arizona Wildcats as the No. 1 team in the country.

Two other national polls — from USA Today and the NFCA — have the Wildcats ranked second.

Arizona swept Stanford this past weekend in Tucson, outscoring the Cardinal 41-2 over three games.

The Wildcats (40-1, 12-0 Pac-12) have won 25 games in a row, and their only loss was at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles, who were the No. 1 ranked team at the time.

Meanwhile, Arizona has collected six wins over ranked teams, including a three-game sweep of No. 12 Washington.

By the numbers

You would be hard-pressed to find a weakness in this Arizona team. Here’s how they rank nationally as a team in major statistical categories:

  • Batting average — 2nd (.353)
  • Runs scored — 1st (339)
  • Home runs — 1st (71)
  • On-base percentage — 3rd (.452)
  • Slugging percentage — 1st (.619)
  • ERA — 2nd (0.84)
  • Fielding percentage — 6th (.979)

Mauga named Pac-12 Player of the Week ... again

For the second week in a row, Arizona third baseman Katiyana Mauga has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week.

The senior was 6-for-9 at the plate with four home runs in Arizona’s sweep of Stanford.

Mauga leads the Pac-12 in homers this season with 16, which is also good for second nationally.

She has 83 career homers, putting her four homers shy of tying the UA’s all-time record, which is held by Stacie Chambers.

Mauga and the Wildcats return to action Thursday when they travel to Salt Lake City to take on the No. 14 Utah Utes in a three-game series.
