Arizona baseball: JJ Matijevic named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Lots of bombs got it done for the junior

JJ Matijevic has gotten more patient at the plate as the year has progressed, and that’s starting to show in his results in a huge way.

The Arizona Wildcats’ junior first baseman was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week after his most recent outburst.

Over the course of four games (one vs. ASU, three vs. WSU), Matijevic was 9-for-16 at the plate, drove in 11 runs, and scored six of his own. Six of those 11 RBI all came in one game, Friday night’s series opener in Pullman. He also hit his sixth home run of the year that night, and it was his third of the week after blasting two against the Sun Devils.

Matijevic now leads the nation in doubles (20) and is ten away from setting the Arizona single-season record in the category. He’s also 31st in the country in batting average (.395), 16th in RBI (38), 32nd in runs scored (35), and 28th in slugging percentage (.690).

This is the second time that an Arizona player has received player of the week honors this year. Nick Quintana got it after his very first week as a Wildcat. Oregon State’s Jake Mulholland was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week this week. Arizona had nominated Tylor Megill.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday night when they take on the Grand Canyon Antelopes in Phoenix. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM PT, and the game will be broadcast on Watch ESPN and the CW6 locally.
