Nebraska officially hires Donte Williams away from Arizona

The Huskers have made it official

On Saturday, it was reported that Arizona Wildcats assistant coach and prominent recruiter Donte Williams had accepted a job offer to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers staff.

On Monday, the move was made official.

Looks like the two day delay was due to this epic photo shoot.

We’ve already seen the impact of Williams’ departure manifest itself in the decommitment of top Arizona commit Greg Johnson. Johnson reopened his recruitment on Sunday as word of Williams moving to Nebraska continued to spread. We also addressed some other things that could happen in the immediate aftermath of this move.

Arizona can go in a couple different directions in trying to find a replacement, but Rich Rodriguez needs to act quickly. Marcel Yates, currently the linebackers coach in addition to being the defensive coordinator, could be moved back to a secondary coach as that’s where all of his experience prior to joining the Arizona staff last year had been. This would allow Rodriguez to find a new linebackers coach, and put Yates in a position where his skills are more useful.

Or, the Wildcats could go out and find yet another dynamic defensive backs coach on the West Coast. The primary name that has come up is current San Diego State recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks coach Tony White. The Aztecs will play Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 17th.

The recruiting dead period starts this weekend, and Arizona will need an assistant in place by then. Losing Williams hurts, but it will hurt more if the position isn’t filled in a swift and effective manner.
