Arizona Tuesday Twitterbag: Wildcat QB struggles, Allonzo Trier, and developing football players
Touching on all kinds of stuff as we head into the part of the year with football and basketball
The 2016-17 Arizona Wildcats basketball team hits the hardwood against another team for the first time on Tuesday night, and of course, there’s still football going on.
So we have questions on both fronts this week in our Twitterbag. To be included in the next version, be sure to follow us @azdesertswarm and get those questions in on Monday night or Tuesday morning!
Here we go:
@azdesertswarm why do all the QB that have play only looking to make the big play and not the simple stuff that seems to always be open
— Jonathan Vázquez (@j_vazquez_93) November 1, 2016
I think there’s a couple things at play here. First is inexperience. Brandon Dawkins and Khalil Tate just simply haven’t played a ton of college football, and while Dawkins is a redshirt sophomore, he’s still a first-year starter, and it’s tough to keep that in mind. Tate of course just turned 18 years old, so it’s not surprising to see him make some poor decisions out there.
Second is offensive line play. Arizona’s quarterbacks don’t have a ton of time to make the proper reads. More often than not, the opposing defensive line is right on top of them, and as we all know, making decisions under pressure doesn’t always go well.
Dawkins’ strength is his legs. He knows that. We know that. Everyone knows that. So it’s not surprising that he looks to keep the ball quicker than maybe some of us would like him to. But maybe some dinks and dunks wouldn’t hurt.
@azdesertswarm does Anu transfer after this season?
— Dragon Slayer (@coach_kain) November 1, 2016
Before Saturday, I would have leaned more towards yes. But now that he’s seen the field again, I’m much more unsure about both Anu Solomon and Tate with regards to what their future plans are. Solomon could be a grad transfer candidate, but we’ll just have to wait and see on that front.
@azdesertswarm why haven't Marcus Griffin & Calvin Allen cracked the rotation? They both have size ¬able rankings but walkons r playing.

Just because you’re big doesn’t mean you’re good at football. You have to give the effort to get better and be good enough to play at the college level. Guys like Justin Belknap, Aiulua Fanene, and several others give the effort. Marcus Griffin, on the other hand, takes full advantage of the college life.
@azdesertswarm Does RR make another coaching change if he gies winless?
— UALoco (@TheUALoco) November 1, 2016
I would like to think one or two coaching changes are coming at the end of the year whether the team goes winless or not. Special teams/TE coach Charlie Ragle seems to have the hottest seat if you will, with offensive line coach Jim Michalczik possibly right there. I don’t think that any of the new defensive coaches, or the core offensive coaching group, is in any trouble.
@azdesertswarm Does Trier play another game for Arizona?
— UALoco (@TheUALoco) November 1, 2016
@azdesertswarm so... What's happening/going to happen with Zo?
— Z (@Writingez99) November 1, 2016
Be patient, let it play out, and we’ll know eventually. Sean Miller keeps no commenting because he has to at this stage. The way he does it is what’s concerning. Arizona’s most prominent head coaches have shown in recent weeks that they’re not great at dealing with adversity.
