Arizona football recruiting: Cienega quarterback Jamarye Joyner ‘shocked and excited’ about offer

The Arizona Wildcats coaching staff has shifted some of their attention to the 2018 class. They’ve been busy handing out quite a few offers over the last few weeks, prepared to make an even bigger jump in recruiting next year.

We’re starting to see the talent pool rise in the state of Arizona, and with the high school football season now in full swing, there are going to be juniors who begin to turn heads.

6-foot, 185 pound dual-threat quarterback Jamarye Joiner did just that to kick off his junior campaign at Cienega (Vail, AZ), which has now landed him an Arizona offer.

Joiner has been in contact with the staff since just after his freshman year, but ran into some trouble. It seems he is now heading in the right direction.

He started out as a freshman at Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, AZ), completing 17 of 35 throws for 203 yards, adding 49 carries for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Out wide at receiver he hauled in 22 catches for 345 yards and a touchdown. He was named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American at wide receiver, and was bound to be nationally ranked in the next recruiting cycle.

Joiner was then dismissed from Salpointe and later enrolled at a charter school for one year. He eventually found his way to Cienega High School.

In his Cienega debut, he torched the defense with his legs, rushing 11 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air he completed four of eight passes for 120 yards.

Just a few days later, the Arizona coaching staff offered him a scholarship.

He’s been on the U of A campus plenty of times, his first time being with his good friend and now-Arizona commit Drew Dixon. This is where Joiner began his communication with the staff, staying in touch with quarterbacks coach Rod Smith since then.

He was also on campus this past summer at Arizona’s 7v7 camp, the same one as future Arizona receiver Nick Hultquist and SJSU commit Kaymen Cureton.

"Shocking and exciting," Joiner said about his Arizona offer. "I didn’t really know what to think, even though it was something I was expecting. It was still breathtaking."

Arizona is his first offer, as is the case with many recruits. Joiner feels like there are a few unnamed schools that are close to offering, they just need to see more tape from this year.

Joiner is planning to take unofficial visits throughout the season. So far, he loves what Arizona and Rich Rodriguez has to offer him.

"The offense, tempo" he explained when asked about what he likes about Rich Rodriguez. "What he expects from the players, they are just an all around good program."

The Cienega QB will be waiting to make his college decision until his senior year, but says that it can change at any moment. When he does commit, he said it’ll come down to comfortability with the staff, NFL preparation, academics and atmosphere.
