Arizona football recruiting: 2016 signee Jessie Britt medically cleared to enroll this spring

Jessie Britt is now able to live his dream

The Arizona Wildcats landed a commitment from 3-star athlete Jessie Britt late in the 2016 recruiting class cycle. Britt had previously committed to Western Kentucky well before his senior season began, ending his recruitment early.

But the long-time WKU commit received an Arizona offer just one month before National Signing Day, and ended up making it to campus for an unofficial visit.

On the day of his unofficial visit, Britt decommitted from Western Kentucky, and all signs were pointing to Arizona. A few weeks later, he committed when Jahmile Addae came for a visit.

But even before he received his Arizona offer in January, Britt’s football career was in jeopardy. One day after the final game of his high school career, Britt was hospitalized after feeling extremely tired and experiencing some tightness in his chest.

Doctors discovered that Britt’s heart was swollen and surrounded by fluid. One early morning, his heart stopped. He needed CPR and electric shock to get it pumping again. He was in stable condition, and was eventually released from the hospital.

In order to be cleared for football activities again, he needed to pass a stress test. I had been told by the staff that it wasn’t likely Britt would ever make it to campus, but he beat the odds. He had a stress test scheduled for August 11th and was told that he can continue playing the game he loves.

The 5-foot-10, 190 pound 3-star athlete will now be enrolling at Arizona this spring, he told me in a message. He’ll be filling the role as a slot receiver for the Wildcats. Enrolling as a grayshirt, he will also go against the scholarship count for 2017, which now brings some complexity to the equation.

The 2017 class has six early enrollees, including Braxton Burmeister, Tony Fields, Darrian McNeal, Matt Leo, Delshawn Phillips and Elijah Watson, which will allow for the coaching staff to move those scholarships back to the 2016 class.

Despite 26 commitments, plus the addition of Jessie Britt, there will still be room to add more talent in this 2017 class.

Britt was involved all over on offense, accumulating over 1,000 total yards and 12 touchdowns in high school. He finished the year with 418 passing yards, 385 rushing and 252 receiving.
