Arizona football: Anu Solomon named to Maxwell Award watch list

The redshirt junior quarterback is being recognized as one of the nation's best college football players

Rich Rodriguez needs a particular type of quarterback to operate his offense. After working through two one-year quarterbacks, Rodriguez found his signal caller of the future once Anu Solomon won the quarterback battle as a redshirt freshman.

Now going into his third year as the starter for the Arizona Wildcats, Solomon is being recognized as one of the nation's best players in all of college football, named to the Maxwell Award watch list.

The offensive line hasn't been kind to Solomon, especially last year. That, along with some other things, led to a variety of injuries that have held him back from being an upper-echelon quarterback. Ankle and hamstring injuries, as well as concussions have slowed him down a bit.

Still, he's proven to be one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the nation, accumulating 6,480 passing yards and 48 touchdowns to just 14 interceptions.

Solomon may get some competition from the guys behind him this fall, with the emergence of Brandon Dawkins, who has gained an immense amount of trust and confidence from the coaching staff. Albeit against an extremely inconsistent defense, Dawkins had a solid performance in his first appearance with a full playbook at his disposal.

Arizona's third-year starter has the potential to play at a high level all year, but if the pieces around him don't live up to their end of the bargain, it could be a long year for No. 12.
