Arizona football recruiting: Devon Modster decommits from Wildcats

One less quarterback for next year's class

A lot of the talk for the Arizona Wildcats heading into 2016 was the amount of quality quarterbacks that would be on the practice field.

Well, that number is one less as Devon Modster has decommitted from Arizona:

Modster is a two-sport star at Tesoro High School, as he is currently putting up big numbers on the hardwood after having a nice season on the football field as well.

He is the 13th-ranked pro-style quarterback in the nation, so this is obviously a tough loss for the Arizona coaching staff. However, Khalil Tate remains committed to Arizona at this time, despite swirling rumors that he could possibly decommit as well. Tate is scheduled to enroll at the University of Arizona in early January, and join the team for spring practice in February.

It's unclear where Modster would go from here, but there should certainly be plenty of options given his talent level. The issue is that it's so late in the game, that most schools already have a quarterback centerpiece lined up if they were looking for one.

This will bring Arizona's current class back down to 17 after adding Kapri Doucet earlier on New Year's Eve.

College Football Playoff predictions, viewing info, open thread

Happy College Football Playoff day everyone

It's New Year's Eve., which means the College Football Playoff is upon us.

The festivities get started at 2 PM MST, when the Clemson Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners meet in the Orange Bowl. Then at 6 PM MST, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan State Spartans will set the second spot in the National Championship Game when they get together in the Cotton Bowl.

Both games will be broadcast on ESPN. There will also be special Spanish broadcasts on ESPN2. If you're looking to stream them, there's always the WatchESPN option.

You can come discuss the games down in the comments section with us. You can also leave your predictions here, as we give our predictions below.

Mike C. Paulus: The first semifinal matchup pitting Clemson and Oklahoma is the more exciting of the two. Both teams sport high-caliber offenses and athletic, powerful defenses. This is the first time in my memory that Clemson didn't suffer an unexplainable loss followed by a complete unraveling of the team. I like how hungry they are. On the other sideline is a Stoops. I'm not a fan of his game preparation and planning. The edge goes to Clemson by a touchdown.

Alabama-Michigan State: I might be the only person in the Midwest who thinks this will be a slaughter. My opinion is that the Big Ten was grossly over-weighted with poor offensive football teams. It just so happens that Michigan State is the best of a poor bunch, which is a lot like being the safest driver in Sun City. It just doesn't mean much. Alabama remains Alabama, and Saban the best coach in the game. The Tide win this one by 20+ points behind the strength of their offensive and defensive lines.

Gabe Encinas: I'm very excited about this Clemson-Oklahoma matchup, and I'm kind of torn between who I want to win. I've been a huge fan of Deshaun Watson and Clemson this season. But at the same time, I love Baker Mayfield's talents and story, and I want to see the Stoops brothers and Tim Kish win it all. This game to me is a toss up, and the winner will go on to win the championship, I believe. I've seen a lot of people pick Oklahoma to win it all, and Oklahoma is a 3.5 point favorite. But for right now, I'd have to take Clemson. Final Score: 44-38 Clemson

I'm not really putting much stock into Michigan State and I was never really a believer in them. I don't think they have the offense to outduel Alabama, but they could keep Derrick Henry limited when it comes to his 20+ yard runs. I don't think Henry should have won the Heisman, simply because he's a product of the system. But he has carried the Crimson Tide this season, and he's virtually unstoppable. Alabama's rush defense is also unreal, and I just think there are any matchups on the field that Michigan State can win. Michigan State is the underdog by 9.5 points, and that's tough, but I might take Alabama. FInal Score: 27-16 Alabama

Alec Sills-Trausch: First and foremost I'm stoked for these games. Without any allegiances going into the College Football Playoff, I just hope to have close games into the fourth quarter. However, I'm still under the impression Clemson, though ranked first, is the "worst" of the bunch. (If it wasn't for hurricane-like conditions, I believe Notre Dame beats them...but I'm a slightly bitter Irish fan so I digress.) With Oklahoma, I feel they have a more complete team with a considerably better offense thanks to Baker Mayfield leading the charge. Currently, Vegas gives the Sooners a four point edge, which is the closest of the major bowls. If this game gets into the 40's, look for Oklahoma to pull it out.

On the other side, the 6pm local time kickoff, is Michigan State-Alabama. Every part of me wants to say Bama is going to lay another brick but I don't think so. The way Derrick Henry has been running the ball this year and the stifling defense the Crimson Tide rolls out is remarkable (I feel we can say this every year though...). Other than the obvious, this will show the power of the two individual conferences. Did beating two top-five teams in their last three games do enough to prepare the Spartans? Or will Alabama, after making it through another arduous SEC slate, run over the team from East Lansing like Vegas currently predicts (10 point spread)? I'm not sure it'll be that big, but I'm ready for an old school, Oklahoma - Alabama, National Championship.

Jason Bartel: I'm going to keep it short and sweet here. Clemson will beat Oklahoma, let's say 34-30. And then Alabama will crush Michigan State, 47-24.

Arizona football recruiting: Kapri Doucet commits to Wildcats

A big time get for the recruiting staff heading into the new year

The Arizona Wildcats ended 2015 with a bang, landing a commitment from the 11th-ranked outside linebacker in the junior college ranks, Kapri Doucet. The 3-star linebacker checks in at 6-3 225lbs, and could be in the rotation immediately for Arizona.

If you've kept up with the recruiting roundups, I've said all along that I was very confident that Arizona would land him. Based on my talks with him, and the other schools in the mix and their recruiting positions, I didn't think Arizona would miss out here. Here's my full interview with him after his official visit to Arizona.

He had Louisville, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Nebraska, among others, on his recruitment. Doucet was planning to take official visits to Louisville and West Virginia in January, so we'll see if things change. Last I talked to him, he said that this might be a signing day decision, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Academics and playing time were two interests of his, and he loved the 3-3-5 scheme in a high-powered offense such as the Pac-12. He also loved the campus. "Man I love it out there. The whole thing. Everything. There was nothing I didn't like about it," he said about his visit.

"Yeah I talked to Coach Casteel about that," he said about the 3-3-5. "We sat down for a little bit and talked about what they run, what they do and the concepts of the 3-3-5 and how they like to do things. I like what I can do in that defense and the role I would be playing and just different things I can be doing at the linebacker positions."

Here are his 2015 highlights from Lackawanna College. I'll be getting on a call with him later Thursday to talk about his decision, and will have more content coming soon.

Arizona baseball: Austin Rubick to add competitiveness to Wildcat pitching staff

The 27th-round draft pick never doubted his decision to come to Tucson

It was the third day of the MLB Draft. Arizona commit Austin Rubick hadn't heard his name called yet. Then as he was with his adviser talking about another guy who just got drafted, the news came down in the 27th round.

"To be honest, I was happy about Kevin Ginkel getting drafted, and I was talking to my adviser about that," Rubick said about that special day. Ginkel was drafted in the 26th round by the Red Sox, and is also now at Arizona. "And we were just talking and all of the sudden he was like 'Hey, you just got drafted a minute ago', and I was still talking up Ginkel. I was really excited about him getting drafted."

"But it was really cool. I got called up by Carlos Munoz for the Indians, and it was a great feeling. It was a great feeling seeing my name up there. I was just with my adviser, and he got a call, and he said hey you're name just popped up. Sweet."

"My mom actually called him before she called me. My phone was off."

It was also three days after Arizona had named Nevada head coach Jay Johnson as Andy Lopez' successor. Even though Johnson hadn't even been the Wildcats' head man for a handful of days, he had already known the top pitching prospect for a while, and had met with him as the Arizona head coach.

Rubick was drafted on a Wednesday, and coach Johnson had met with the pitching prospect that Tuesday.

"I was on a plane Tuesday to meet with Austin Rubick (and others)," Johnson said. "Essentially (all the guys) that had showed up. All the other guys in the class, it was not realistic for them to show up for various reasons. We assessed where we had to make an impact."

"The day before the draft, he either flew out or drove out, and he came to my house and he told me the pros and cons to college baseball and the draft, and he said 'Whatever decision you make, I wish you the best of luck'," Rubick explained as to what happened in that visit. "I just loved his program and the way he spoke, and he really sold me on the college experience, and there's nothing you could trade it for."

Johnson also recruited Rubick while he was at Nevada, but it didn't get very far.

"I didn't get that far in the process with Nevada," Rubick said when I asked if he had spoken to pitching coach Dave Lawn before coming to Arizona. "But I mainly talked to Johnson, and I could already tell he was a good guy from the phone, and I'm really blessed with coach Lawn too. He's really an amazing pitching coach, and he's really gonna take this pitching staff far."

Even though the potential of getting drafted was always there, Rubick really wanted to come to Tucson to go to college all along.

"I could bring up hundreds of different things and I can tell you that I love all of them," he told me of what he liked about Arizona. "There's just something about being a Wildcat and the Wildcat way. Really just grabs your attention and you really want to be a part of it."

"It was a blast," he said of his first visit to Tucson. "I was smiling the entire time. This place is a special place."

Obviously he was committed to Arizona while Andy Lopez was still in charge, but Lopez' retirement didn't push him away from becoming a Wildcat at all.

"(Matt) Siegel just let me know that Lopez resigned and that he just said 'Best of luck' and whatever you decide, you decide," Rubick reminisced on that day. "He loved Arizona and wanted to stay, but a couple things happened and he didn't end up staying, but he really loved this place, and I think everyone else does too."

"I think we got here July 12th, and it was like in August, (I got a call from the Indians) and they said best of luck. I had great support from all the scouts."

Rubick not only brings the stuff to succeed at the college level right away, he also brings the mentality a freshman needs to compete in a conference like the Pac-12 week in and week out.

"I just grab the ball and know it's my game," the freshman said of his mentality on the mound. "There's nothing else like being up there and having that control, and I feel like when the ball's in my hand, we're gonna do good things."

While Johnson is not a guy who will set his "weekend rotation", there's no doubt that Rubick will be high up on the list as an option.

"I see myself as a competitor and I hope to get there. I just want to be the best that I can be in the shortest amount of time as possible, and I just want to compete the entire time I'm here in college."

That competitiveness has been missing the past three years. A guy like Austin Rubick is here to start the new era of Arizona baseball, and hopefully usher the Wildcats back into a prolonged period of success.

Pac-12 Basketball Power Rankings: Arizona on top heading into conference play

Let there be conference play!

We are on the verge of conference play beginning in the Pac-12, so we set out to rank the conference after the non-conference part of the season.

The only things that all five agreed on was that Arizona is the best team, and Stanford is the worst.

Here's how the voting turned out, with golf scoring used for the points (1 for 1st, 2 for 2nd, etc.):

Ranking Team Points
1 Arizona Wildcats 5
2 Utah Utes 14
3 Oregon Ducks 15
4 California Golden Bears 20
5 UCLA Bruins 22
6 Colorado Buffaloes 31
7 USC Trojans 32
8 Arizona State Sun Devils 41
9 Oregon State Beavers 42
10 Washington Huskies 51
11 Washington State Cougars 54
12 Stanford Cardinal 60

As has been the case throughout the season, there are a few pairs of teams that are really close and tough to decipher between. Utah/Oregon, Cal/UCLA, CU/USC and ASU/OSU are all within one or two points of each other, showing how similarly their respective seasons have played out to this point.

Hopefully conference play begins to bring a little clarity to where all of these teams stand. The top seven, possibly the top nine, all have a chance to make at least a little noise in the Pac-12 this year. It's about to get interesting.

Check back here every Wednesday throughout the rest of the season for our updated Pac-12 Power Rankings after each weekend of games.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Rawle Alkins adds Arizona to his final list of nine

Sean Miller back in the running for a very highly-ranked 2016 recruit

We might be in the middle of an extremely long stretch without any Arizona Wildcats basketball, but Sean Miller is out here making moves. Five-star 2016 shooting guard Rawle Alkins apparently had a nice conversation with coach Miller, as Arizona has been added to Alkins' final list of nine schools

Alkins is the 16th-ranked player in the entire country, and the third-best shooting guard. If Arizona can make a late run here, that would be an enormous get for Miller and company.

Arizona football and basketball recruiting: Decision dates and rumors

Some recruiting updates and rumors for both football and basketball

Rich Rodriguez' recruiting class checks in at No. 37 in the nation, with just about a month before National Signing Day. There's been some news throughout the last week, and I felt like it was worthy of getting another recruiting roundup going. I reached out to Twitter earlier this week and asked you all what you wanted to know, so below are some of those topics as well. If there's anything I missed that you would like to know in the future, drop your suggestions in the comments below.

3-star corner Terrell Burgess sets commitment date

Arizona has been on Terrell Burgess' recruitment for quite some time now. It appears as if he's finally settled on a decision date, which will be January 29th.

He told me a few weeks ago that it would ultimately come down to the three schools he officially visited, as well as San Diego State and California. Those three visits included Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. He said no school was in the lead. However, he has said that Arizona and Utah are recruiting him the hardest, and I would think Arizona holds a slight advantage.

Are people overanalyzing Khalil Tate's social media?

Probably. Khalil Tate's tweet sent out late on Christmas Eve started a whirlwind of panic.

Tate's social media game has always been ambiguous, and people always seem to think that it surrounds his recruitment, especially as of late. He was flirting with USC for a bit, and even took a visit, but said he was 100% with his commitment to Arizona. I haven't been worried about Khalil's commitment, and I would still be surprised if he ditched Arizona.

He's set to enroll early, and I wish I knew when these recruits actually enroll, but I do not. It has to be sometime in early January, as Jalen Tabor once quickly switched from Arizona to Florida, and enrolled at Florida in the following days.

3-star JUCO linebacker Kapri Doucet trims his list to six

I've talked a lot about Kapri Doucet, so I won't say much more here. He trimmed his list to six, and there's no surprise that Arizona made that list. He's set to visit Louisville and West Virginia in January, and I think Louisville gives Arizona the biggest run for his services. As of now, I feel confident saying he'll commit to Arizona, just before or on signing day. Here's my interview with him if you want a little bit more on his recruitment.

Sean Riley recruiting rumors

Some big time recruiting drama here for Arizona. Apparently, Sean Riley was asked to grey shirt, and it seems as if that's not an enticing option for him. His high school coach openly said that Utah should get back on Riley's recruitment, meaning that there's a chance he could leave Arizona.

Utah missed out on 4-star running back Melquise Stovall, who was also an Arizona target, and now it seems as if the Utes' staff will be trying to make a move for a running back in this class.

It seems a little odd that Arizona asked him to grey shirt, especially when you have Russell Halimon, who is recovering from a torn ACL, and likely won't be playing at all his freshman year. Although, I understand why this happened. Riley might be the rawest running back commit of the four, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

For those who aren't familiar with the grey shirt route, here's a brief explanation. A grey shirt will not join the team in the summer after their high school graduation, or even be on campus during the fall semester. Instead, they will be enrolling the following January, and essentially pushing back their eligibility an entire year.

They'll have that spring to be with the team, and begin as a true freshman in the subsequent fall. This is where the recruit can even redshirt, allowing them to be with the team for essentially five and a half years. The only problem is the fact that you're delaying your plans an entire semester, and you might not even see the field until what would have been your second year with the program had they not been asked to grey shirt. Beneficial for some, but frustrating for all.

Arizona has been grey shirting a few guys in the past, and it's a smart move, especially when you have injuries for some recruits, especially with guys like Keenan Walker and Antonio Parks, or even incoming guys like Jacob Colacion, Russell Halimon and Justin Holt.

London Iakopo and his Louisville visit

So there seems to be a mutual interest between Iakopo and Louisville, so much in fact that he is apparently taking an official visit on January 22nd. A scary thought for sure, considering the fact that Arizona will be losing William Parks, Anthony Lopez and Jamar Allah, which would give Iakopo a great opportunity to play immediately.

He was offered by Louisville at the end of November, and talks must be going well considering his plans. He said he is still committed to Arizona, but wants to visit Louisville before signing. Hailing from Long Beach, California, Louisville is a long ways away from home, and proximity to home and family seems to be fairly important for Iakopo. I wouldn't be overly concerned here, but there is a chance that Louisville makes a move.

What goes to show Iakopo's talents is the fact that Rich Rodriguez didn't pull his offer. Rodriguez is adamant that his commits do not take any other official visits. We saw Naijiel Hale take a visit to Washington, even after Rodriguez specifically said he would pull the offer if he went. Hale went, and committed to UW during his visit.

A few mid-year enrollees

Rich Rodriguez had said that he anticipates about 7-9 guys or so to enroll early, a mix of early enrollees and grey shirts.

Here are a few that I have figured out/learned over the last few weeks.

Isaiah Hayes (CB), Khalil Tate (QB), Kahi Neves (LB), Antonio Parks (CB), Jamie Nunley (TE), Darrell Clark (WR), Keenan Walker (OT) and Harper Sherman (OT).

Arizona could replace Casey Skowron with 5-star kicker

I got a request to talk about kicking prospects, and I love talking about this guy. Collin Riccitelli came to town on an unofficial visit for the Washington State game, and absolutely loved it. Here's my interview with him about his visit and recruitment.

He said that if Arizona had an extra scholarship, they would likely offer him. I'm not exactly sure where Arizona's scholarship number lines up considering the grey shirts and what not, but I'd be surprised if Arizona fills this class with 25 commits.

As a kicker, he'll have to wait until the final minute to commit, because he would like to go somewhere on scholarship. If that doesn't happen, he'll go as a preferred walk-on where ever he chooses. He currently only holds an offer to Navy, but there are many schools who could offer him.

He said he was a fan of kicking in the desert, because it's at elevation and the air is very dry, allowing the ball to travel better through the air. I would love Arizona to be able to offer Riccitelli, not only because having a 5-star kicker would be amazing, but because he would make the transition from Skowron flow a little better. If not, Josh Pollack is the next kicker in line, who is on scholarship.

****

I got a request for some hoops info, so here it is.

Josh Jackson's list is not finalized

There were reports earlier in the week saying that Josh Jackson's recruitment had come down to two schools; Arizona and Michigan State. This came at the heels of his visit with Michigan State, watching the Spartans win in overtime against Oakland.

So if those aren't the final two, it seems as if Kansas would be the other school truly in the mix. UNLV and Maryland are in his final five now, but those don't seem to be threats. He plans to decide in late February.

Harry Froling will be Arizona's next best option

If Arizona doesn't land Josh Jackson, things might not look good for the Wildcats. With Andrew Jones committing to Texas a few weeks ago, Mitch Lightfoot committing to Kansas, Markelle Fultz heading to Washington, and TJ Leaf flipping, this hasn't been a great recruiting year for Sean Miller.

All that seems left would be Harry Froling, an Austrailian big man. Here's what his recruitment looks like as of now.

Don't fret with his ranking, only rated as a three-star prospect. This is likely because he's overseas, and it's much, much harder to assess the talent over there and compare with what we have in the states.

He has offers from Illinois, SMU and Wisconsin. He will be visiting SMU on January 5th, Illinois on January 10th, Arizona on Janaury 13th and Wisconsin on Janauary 16th. Given the timing of his four visits, you would think he'd be ready to make his decision soon after his visit to Wisconsin.

Arizona basketball: Parker Jackson-Cartwright poised for improvement in 2016

Arizona is going to need contributions from its backup point guard in Pac-12 play

By and large, the Arizona Wildcats offense has looked smooth and productive throughout the non-conference portion of the 2015-16 schedule.

But lately, one guy that hasn't been a part of that is backup point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright. Over the past six games, the sophomore has shot just 7-for-34 (20.5%) from the field, and is 2-of-16 (12.5%) from three. Despite these numbers, Sean Miller isn't worried.

"Parker and I together really have worked the last three days behind the scenes in the gym, and I'm just gonna make a prediction: he's gonna shoot the basketball so much better in Pac-12 play than he has so far," Miller said after the Long Beach State game on the 22nd.

"I have never seen a young guy miss more shots with the ball in and out of the rim than he has," coach explained about his prediction. "I thought he had two or three (vs. LBSU) halfway down that popped out, and I just think that once he makes a few, he'll never look back."

Even if that's true, Parker has only had three games this year where he had more than two field goal attempts and made over half of his shots (both Boise State games and Providence).

"He's a very good shooter," continued coach. "And a lot like our other guys, he's invested a TON of work to get better at that, and when the ball doesn't go down, it can effect everything that you do."

Overall this year, Jackson-Cartwright has averaged just over 21 minutes per game, scoring 4.7 points per contest, while dishing out 3.4 assists to 1.2 turnovers.

"At times he's been challenging," Miller said about Parker's performance in non-conference play. "At times he's played well, but we have not seen the best out of him. Our team needs him to be better, and I know he'll be better."

The point guard is scoring those 4.7 PPG on just 33% shooting overall.

"It's going to start with his shot, because he's too good of a shooter to keep missing the way he has."

"He can really shoot it, and time will even that out."

It hasn't been all bad for him recently though. In the last five games, the Wildcats have scored at least 80 points in each one, and Jackson-Cartwright has racked up 17 assists to just five turnovers. So it's not like his shooting has him down.

"I think we're just moving the ball and being really unselfish," PJC said after the Long Beach game. "Getting out in transition and just finding the open man."

If Arizona can start getting some consistent contributions from Jackson-Cartwright in the points category, and the turnovers remain where they are, this could be an extremely dangerous offensive team as it makes its way through the Pac-12 schedule.

UCLA will start conference play with a number by its name, as the Bruins climb into the 25th spot in the AP poll. Utah also moved its way up to 21st/22nd.

Oregon, Colorado, Cal and even USC are now receiving votes. The Pac-12 will need some separation between the top half and the bottom half during conference play to get as many teams as possible into the NCAA Tournament it seems.

Around the rest of the country, there are still five unbeaten teams remaining. SMU is ineligible for the postseason, but it'll be interesting to see how long Michigan State, Oklahoma, Xavier and South Carolina can keep that zero in the loss column.

Arizona basketball roundtable: Expectations for the Wildcats in Pac-12 play

How will Arizona fare in the Pac-12?

In part two of this week's roundtable, we discuss what we now expect from the Arizona Wildcats in Pac-12 play.

If you missed part one, it was about our biggest takeaways from the non-conference season.

What record do you foresee this team finishing Pac-12 play with?

Gabe Encinas: I would anticipate maybe five losses in the Pac-12 schedule. Arizona State is pretty decent this year, and they've been able to have success against Arizona, or at least under Herb Sendek. Any game vs. California, Utah, UCLA and Oregon could also result in a loss. I don't think Arizona loses to all of those teams, but those definitely drop three or four of those eight games. And then probably some stupid loss to Oregon State or Washington State.

Brandon Hill: I still feel like Arizona is the best team in the league. Oregon, Cal, and UCLA have been inconsistent. Utah is talented and plays a similar style of defensive-minded basketball (and beating Duke in an always pro-Duke Madison Square Garden was very impressive). Road games vs. UCLA, Cal, Utah, and Colorado will be tough, particularly the Utah and Colorado swing in February. I envision a 16-2 league season with a road loss in one of those aforementioned tilts and one other road flop, a la @ASU last year. The home streak lives on.

Ivan Leonard: Picking Arizona's conference record is so difficult because at this point they should be favored to win every game until the NCAA tournament, but that is highly unlikely. I believe they lose three conference games with one going to Cal in a shootout and one going to Oregon. The last loss is probably going to a team who misses the tournament like all three of Arizona's losses last year so I am going to guess Stanford.

Ryan Kelapire: I'm probably a bit over optimistic here, but I think Arizona will finish with a 15-3 conference record. I don't envision them losing at home this season, but I do see them dropping three of the five games at Colorado, at Utah, at ASU, at UCLA, and at Cal. Maybe I'm wrong and they'll lose four of five of those, but I don't have much confidence in the strength of the Pac-12. And not having to play on the road against Oregon and Oregon State -- two of the better teams in the conference -- is a huge favor for the Wildcats. So, in short, my answer is 15-3 with all three losses coming on the road.

Alec Sills-Trausch: I'm still under the impression this is the best team in the Pac-12, even though the entire conference (minus Stanford) has probably exceeded expectations during the non-conference slate. With that said, it's completely unrealistic to believe that the Wildcats will win out. With long road trips, we're destined to lose a few. However, my first prediction is I believe our home winning streak stays in tack through the 2016 season. I also do not believe this opening road swing at ASU, UCLA,and USC will not be as dangerous as most expect. If those first three games go well, the Cats have a legitimate shot at starting off at the minimum of 9-2 (with possible losses to only Oregon or California). As Miller gets the team rolling into March, we'll see the potential we hoped for in October come to fruition as we set foot in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 tournament. Final conference record: 14-4

David Potts: Like Alec, I still think this is the best team in the Pac-12, but I don't think the margin is that great. Importantly, I think that the tough road games the Wildcats will face in the Pac-12 are toss-ups at best, and even if Arizona is 90% to win every home game, they'll still probably drop one (because math). I'm going to say they finish 13-5, which is still good enough to win a very balanced and competitive Pac-12, but not good enough to run away with the conference title.

Matt Sheeley: I think the conference is highly competitive but I do think Arizona is still the cream of the crop. They're not losing at home so I'll say 14-4 with a loss at Cal, at Utah and two upset losses to unexpected teams, which naturally ends with their student sections rushing the court.

James Schlittenhart: Arizona goes 13-5 in a surprisingly competitive Pac-12, which may still be enough to win the conference outright as the teams cannibalize during the regular season. UCLA, Cal, Utah, Oregon, Colorado, and even ASU are all proving to be decent to good teams this year, so nothing is going to be handed to the Wildcats.

Jason Bartel: I still think this team goes, at worst, 14-4 in conference play. The only team I could see coming into McKale and winning a game is Oregon, and I don't think they will, though it'll be close. Like mentioned above, at least one loss will come on the backend of a road trip. Other than that though, the Pac-12 is strong in the middle, but not at the top, so Arizona should still win the conference by two games.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Scooby Wright heads to Miami for NFL Draft prep

Tis the season for NFL Draft decisions

We already knew that Scooby Wright III wasn't coming back to the Arizona Wildcats next year, but now we know where he'll be training for the NFL over the next fourish months

According to the Bommarito website, guys like Von Miller, Navorro Bowman, Brandon Spikes and others have come through as linebackers, so there's at least some previous successes that have been there before

- Joining Wright in the draft will be Cayleb Jones, as he officially announced he will forego his senior season on his Twitter account

- Already in the NFL is Ka'Deem Carey, and he went full-on Michael Jackson after he scored a touchdown on Sunday for the Bears

- Terrell Burgess says that Arizona and Utah are the two schools recruiting him the most, and that he'll make his decision in late January

- Remember when the entire Big 12 was going to make the Pac-16? And that didn't happen because of Texas and the Longhorn Network? Well, the LHN has been an unmitigated disaster for ESPN and Texas

Arizona football: Cayleb Jones declares for 2016 NFL Draft

Jones is taking his talents to the next level

It turns out that Scooby Wright III won't be the only Arizona Wildcats player to leave early for the NFL Draft as wide receiver receiver Cayleb Jones announced on Sunday afternoon that he will forgo his senior year and will enter his name into the 2016 NFL Draft.

Here's his farewell statement:

Jones, who transferred from Texas, had 904 receiving yards and five touchdowns this season, but didn't quite have the year many expected him to in 2015 after reaching the 1,000-yard mark in 2014 as a sophomore. Though a lot of that had to do with the unstable quarterback situation the Wildcats had this season.

He did end his career with a remarkable 182-yard performance in the New Mexico Bowl, however, and there's no doubt that the 6-3, big play receiver will draw a lot of interest from NFL teams.

Arizona basketball roundtable: Takeaways from the Wildcats' non-conference schedule

Where does Arizona stand heading into Pac-12 play?

The non-conference portion of the Arizona Wildcats schedule is behind us, and conference play picks up on January 3rd with a trip up to Tempe.

We take a look at what the takeaways from non-con play were. Let us know what you think now!

Jason Bartel: What's the biggest positive you took away from non-conference season?

Gabe Encinas: This team is finally starting to come together. Going into the season I anticipated about three losses in the non-conference schedule, and now looking back on that Providence loss, I get a little greedy thinking about how that is our only loss to date. Allonzo Trier has been balling out, and along with Gabe York and Kadeem Allen, those seem to be the go-to scorers, with Trier now being the most consistent. Mark Tollefsen seems to be a lot more confident in his role, and I like the way Justin Simon has started to pick up some minutes. I feel like over time this team will get better, and it should only get better once Kaleb Tarczewski comes back. Or at least I'm hoping that's the case, because this team has finally found some rhythm without him in the lineup.

Brandon Hill: This team has a variety of scoring options on any given night. Recent Sean Miller teams had moments, sometimes entire games, where you simply didn't know where the scoring would come from. Because of how great the pack-line has operated, the Cats have been able to grind out opponents even if they only scored 60 points. This year's team has three legitimate scorers who can get 20+ on a given night (Anderson, York, and Trier) as well as several others (Ristic, Tollefsen, Allen) who've provided some nice scoring punch at times. They're not as efficient as recent teams but more explosive.

Ryan Kelapire: The team is more than capable of handling adversity. They have been without Kaleb Tarczewski for a few weeks now, Ray Smith is out for the season, and Ryan Anderson and Kadeem Allen have both been banged up as well. I thought Zeus' injury in particular would be rather devastating, but they've weathered the storm remarkably well. The team has managed to play through the issues and they seem to be improving each week too.

Ivan Leonard: I am impressed by how great the offense is and the fact that they can improve on that end as the season progresses is a great sign. Ryan Anderson is going to consistently provide a solid outing while freshman Allonzo Trier has been playing like a seasoned vet since the Providence loss. He is unstoppable when heading to the basket, consistent in the mid-range, and has gone 10-20 from three in the past five games, so teams cannot play him for the drive. And when those two are off, Gabe York showed in the Gonzaga game that he can hit a timely jumper or four to get the team back on track and stop the game from getting out of hand.

Alec Sills-Trausch: Saying that everyone above nailed most of the positive and I'm not into recycling good ideas, I'm going to give a great big shout out to the McKale Center crowd. Of the nine home games, five of them have been sellouts and with all games included, McKale has been filled at 98%. With unimposing teams coming to McKale so far this season, that's fantastic! As Wildcat fans, we're so blessed to have some of the greatest fans in the country and it's good to know some things never change. One more thing, I think we need to point out the play of Dusan Ristic, who is averaging eight points and five rebounds a game filling in mostly full-time for Kaleb Tarczewski. While still raw, he has shown an efficient offensive skill set which can be counted on and maybe even teach Zeus a thing or two.

David Potts: That we can win without Tarczewski. I still think that Zeus needs to come back for Arizona to be able to make a tournament run, but the fact that Arizona was able to beat Gonzaga and UNLV without him gives me some hope that the Wildcats will be able to stay competitive while he's gone and get even better once he's back.

Matt Sheeley: I totally agree with Ryan's point about how tenacious this squad is proving to be. But I specifically want to talk about the offense. This is a very inexperienced team in terms of how long the group has been together. Considering four starters are gone from last year plus all the injuries (and the Pitts disappearance), it's been freshmen, transfers and Gabe York. Sean Miller has proven to be a defensive coach through his years in Tucson. You almost expect the team to be stingy on that side of the ball, no matter the roster. But it's the offense that has been the story. They attack relentlessly. Arizona has scored 80+ in five straight games. This is the first time that's happened since Lute's final season walking the Wildcat sideline. That was NINE years ago!

James Schlittenhart: Sean Miller can coach. Maybe that was obvious to a lot of folks, but I truly believed that for much of his time at Arizona, he has been able to succeed based more on superior recruits than coaching acumen. So far this season, I think Miller deserves a significant amount of credit for the way he's handled this team that isn't necessarily loaded across the board and still come away with a top 10 ranking and only one loss.

JB: What's the biggest negative you took away?

GE: The lack of a momentum playmaker. The past few years, Arizona has always had a guy or two that could come up with a block, diving steal, or electrifying dunk that swiftly shifts the momentum. Those plays quickly got the momentum necessary to pull away, or even mount the comeback. Whether that was Nick Johnson, Aaron Gordon, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Stanley Johnson or T.J. McConnell, Arizona always seemed to have that. Gabe York has his dunk attempts here and there, maybe Mark Tollefsen with the oop, but none like the ones we've seen in the past.

BH: I've mentioned it before but the main concern I have, and it flies in the face of the first question, is while this team does finally have multiple go-to scorers, they do not have a go-to defender out on the wings. It just shows what a nice luxury a guy like Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (or Aaron Gordon for his one season) was for the Cats; long, versatile players who could defend multiple positions to key on the other team's best player(s). Hopefully by the teeth of league play someone emerges.

RK: Brandon hit the nail on the head. The team's lack of a go-to defender has been very evident at times, and I don't really think that issue will be resolved this season. The roster obviously isn't changing and I don't see a player on the team that will take a huge leap from now until the end of the season. Though hopefully I'm wrong and someone like Kadeem Allen or Justin Simon becomes that lockdown defender the team desperately needs.

IL: I also agree with Brandon in that they lack a go-to wing defender to slow down opponents on the perimeter. Last season they held Chasson Randle to a 4-13 performance, Joe Young to a 7-19 outing, and future lottery pick D'Angelo Russell to a 3-19 performance due to their perimeter defense, but this year they are really lacking in that area. Unless Justin Simon matures quickly or Elliott Pitts comes back from his sabbatical even better on that end, this team might just have to outscore everybody for once in the Sean Miller era. Their team defense is solid as usual but their need for a lockdown defender might be exposed when they play a team with multiple scorers on the wing like Cal does with Tyrone Wallace, Jaylen Brown, and company.

AST: Parker Jackson-Cartwright's development, or lackthereof, is something that should be noted. While his assist-to-turnover ratio is solid, everything else about this offensive game is jello-like. As a point guard who shoots 33% overall and 20% from behind the arc, him being on the court essentially clogs the lane, as teams are now playing so far off of him the paint has become a clogged artery. Last year, the sophomore PG shot 45% from the field and 39% via the 3pt line. Hopefully as the team gets into the rhythm of the conference schedule, he and the entire team will settle into a more consistent playing style.

DP: The offense still really worries me. Admittedly, the offense seems to have clicked in recent weeks, but this has been against relatively weak teams (with a home win against a marginal UNLV team as the only real test). I'm not confident that the offense will hold up against Pac-12 competition. The three-point shooting, in particular, has been very bad, with a team average of only 32.6% from three and only one player averaging more than an attempt a game - Gabe York - above 35%. If this is how the team shoots against NAU, Long Beach State, and Missouri, how will the Wildcats shoot against Oregon, USC, or Cal?

MS: Oddly enough, it's also offense related. The three-point shooting is a concern to me. Perhaps my expectations were too high for this area but I expected it to be one of Arizona's strengths this season. Complaining feels silly considering they're attacking the rim so well. But I do wonder what will happen when Arizona doesn't get many calls when going at the rim. Can they flat out shoot their way to a win? Will it have to be Gabe York's irrational confidence to win a game? Or can others chime in? It'll be interesting to watch.

JS: I sincerely wonder if any of my negative takeaways from the beginning of this season are solely based on my own unfair expectations for Arizona basketball. The team is 11-1, has a big win over Gonzaga on the road, and lost only to a team that is a lock to make the tournament with a potential lottery pick in the starting five. Do I wish the defense was as stingy as last year? Of course. Do I wish the offense had Mike Bibby on the perimeter? You bet. Are either of those things realistic or fair? Not a chance. I'm overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised with how this team has performed to this point. Obviously, the defense is still a concern, but I trust the oft-praised defensive mind of Sean Miller to fix that as the games wear on.

Sonoran Hot Reads: Arizona commit JJ Taylor named LA Times' back of the year

A major award for a guy making his way to Tucson

If you follow Arizona recruiting somewhat closely, you're probably aware that running back commit JJ Taylor has put up some ridiculous numbers in his senior year of high school. Well, that translated into a major honor for the Corona Centennial back, as the L.A. Times named him their high school back of the year. According to the Times, Taylor finished the year with 2,149 yards and 41 touchdowns, despite sitting out most fourth quarters. This is what his coach had to say:

"He's an amazing athlete," Coach Matt Logan said. "He probably should have 4,000 yards rushing if it was a normal season. He's an incredible player. He has it all. He runs hard, has balance, speed, he's tough, he can catch the ball."

Congrats to JJ, and looking forward to seeing him in an Arizona uniform in 2016

Arizona baseball: Bobby Dalbec named Louisville Slugger preseason All-American

Let the hype begin!

It's a little less than two months away from the beginning of the college baseball season, and the hype around Arizona's top player has begun.

Bobby Dalbec, who is projected as a first or second round pick in this year's MLB Draft, was named a Louisville Slugger 2nd-team preseason All-American.

The announcement lists Dalbec as just a third baseman, with Wake Forest's Will Craig getting 1st-team honors at the position. Craig hit 13 home runs and batted .382 in 2015 for the Demon Deacons.

But it is expected that Dalbec will play a crucial role on the 2016 pitching staff, just like he did in 2015.

"It's up in the air right now," Dalbec told me back in November about whether or not he'd be a starting pitcher or not. "I think it's leaning more towards me being a bullpen guy, but you never know what could happen. I've been working short, second and third, and I've thrown one or two innings every Sunday."

Dalbec played for Team USA and in the Cape Cod League this past summer. He struggled a bit with Team USA, but it was a huge learning experience for him.

"Now I know what Cubans throw," he joked. "It was fun. It definitely gives you a new perspective, and having USA on that jersey across your chest is a really good feeling."

"(Cubans) throw everything," he said about what he had to face. "A lot of located off-speed from the two countries we played against, but it was cool. It was a good learning experience. I had a little skid with Team USA but I tried not to get down in a hole or in a rut."

In 2015, the Arizona slugger hit a Pac-12 leading 15 home runs, to go along with his .319 batting average and 53 RBI with the Wildcats. He also posted a 3.21 ERA in 21 appearances on the mound, striking out 48 batters in 61 2/3 innings.

Dalbec is one of seven players from the Pac-12 selected to the preseason All-American list. He's joined by Cal's Daulton Jeffries, WSU's Ian Hamilton, OSU's KJ Harrison, ASU's Colby Woodmansee, Oregon's Matt Krook, and Stanford's Cal Quantrill. It's interesting to see that no Pac-12 team could land multiple players on the preseason list.

All eyes will be on Dalbec and JJ Matijevic this year as Arizona looks to return to the postseason for the first time since 2012. The season starts February 19th at Rice.

Arizona football: Top moments of the 2015 season

Not the prettiest season for Arizona, but still filled with some great moments from start to finish

Of Rich Rodriguez' four years with the Arizona Wildcats, this was surely the most disappointing of them, especially considering the success he found immediately. But throughout the year, there were still some memorable moments. Here are my top five moments of the season, stemming all the way from this summer.

Arizona takes down No. 10 Utah in double overtime

Arizona's sixth win of the season, granting them bowl eligibility, came at the hands of the 10th-ranked Utah Utes. The upset kept Rich Rodriguez' streak alive for beating top 10 opponents each of the last four years, including No. 9 USC, No. 5 Oregon, and No. 2 Oregon.

After taking a controversial blow to the head, Anu Solomon was taken out of the game, and in came Jerrard Randall in the 4th quarter. He led the team through double overtime, and had the game-winning touchdown pass to Nate Phillips.

Also a weird coincidence, as those who are seniors at the university, such as myself, the first game of undergrad ended in an overtime win vs. Toledo, and the last game resulted in an overtime win.

Rich Rod declines South Carolina

Rich Rodriguez' name is constantly coming up in the coaching carousel, due to his success at turning around a program such as Arizona. The conversations with South Carolina started heating up, and many believed that Rich Rodriguez was a goner. Heck, some were adamant that he had other coaching positions in his head during the season, which some thought was the reason for the throttling by Washington.

Rumors were swirling, with claims that South Carolina already agreed with Will Muschamp, or the longer the situation dragged on the worse it was for Arizona, and so on. But late on December 6th, Greg Byrne shut it down with one tweet.

Rich Rodriguez even tweeted, too.

And this is probably how the announcement conversation went.

Will Parks lays down the wood

Amidst the pounding of the Oregon State Beavers, William Parks came through with quite possibly the best hit in college football for 2015. Jordan Villamin was coming across the middle, and that boy Will Parks had a shoulder waiting for him.

At least Villamin was a good sport about it.

Rich Rod hangs out with the gymnastics team, does Nae Nae

Rich Rodriguez has been in quite a few popular videos during his time at Arizona, but none more popular than him hitting the Nae Nae. He was joined by the Arizona Gym Cats, as well as safeties Paul Magloire and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles. This was just pure gold.

Will Parks shares a special moment with referee prior to overtime vs. Utah

During the overtime coin flip, Will Parks and the referee had a moment. Very awkward, yet very tender moment between the two.

****

There were a few other great moments for this team, so here's an honorable mention list. If I left one out, feel free to share in comment section below.
