NCAA Softball Tournament results: Arizona advances to Tucson Regional final
The Wildcats are one win away from Super Regionals
In another low-scoring game, the Arizona Wildcats downed the Minnesota Golden Gophers 5-1 to advance to Sunday's Tucson Regional Final.
The Wildcats did it behind another complete game inside the circle. On Friday, it was Michelle Floyd. On Saturday, it was Trish Parks.
The freshman gave up five hits and two walks over the course of her seven innings, turning into the one earned run.
Minnesota's one run came in the third. The Gophers put runners on the corners with one out, and a grounder to second brought in what would be their only run of the game.
Parks ran into trouble again in the 4th, as Minnesota loaded the bases with just one down. But a strikeout followed by a groundball to second ended the threat. The Gophers also got runners into scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but Parks managed to strand them as well.
The scoring for Arizona started in the second inning thanks to a home run off the bat of Katiyana Mauga. In the third. Mauga drew a walk that loaded the bases. Another walk to Chelsea Goodacre brought in Arizona's second run, and they would never look back.
A three-hit 5th would score two more runs for the Wildcats, and then an RBI single by Kellie Fox in the sixth would wrap up the scoring.
Arizona may get Minnesota again on Sunday, depending on how the final two Saturday games go at Hillenbrand Stadium. Sunday's action will start at 4 PM Pacific time, where the Wildcats will need to win one game to advance to next week's Super Regional.
The winner of the Tucson Regional will play the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional, where ASU is in the driver's seat to get out of the bracket. We're very close to a UA/ASU Super Regional in Tucson next weekend.
