Arizona baseball recap: Huskies scratch out 3-2 win over Wildcats

Even a Bobby Dalbec complete game couldn't save the series.

The Arizona Wildcats entered Sunday's game needed a win to take its final Pac-12 home series of the year, and despite a complete game from Bobby Dalbec, the Washington Huskies pulled out a 3-2 win to take the three-game set.

Arizona scored both of its runs in the fifth inning. It started with a Zach Gibbons walk, who then advanced to second on a sac bunt by Justin Behnke.

Scott Kingery jabbed a ball through the right side to bring in Gibbons. Kingery, who was playing with the flu, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a Kevin Newman groundout to second.

Riley Moore followed that with a walk to bring up Bobby Dalbec.

The Wildcats' starting pitcher laced a pitch to left to bring home Kingery and cut the Washington lead to 3-2.

Dalbec did his job on the mound, setting a new career-high with ten strikeouts. That's also the most by an Arizona pitcher in 2015.

"I thought Bobby did an outstanding job," coach Lopez said after the game. "Really he had one pitch just run back into the zone for a two-run home run."

That home run was hit by Washington catcher Austin Rei in the third inning, hitting just below the scoreboard in left field.

"I heard that from J.T. Snow when I was doing the interview in the fourth inning," coach continued. "But you know, (Dalbec) did a good job."

"Pitched the heck out of it. Looked like a Friday night guy, so that was good."

The sophomore righty hurled a complete game in defeat, surrendering nine hits and three walks resulting in the three earned runs.

"Just a fastball that ran back over," Dalbec said. "Yeah, it happens."

"I'm just trying to make pitches," he continued. "Hitters in the Pac try to hit mistakes, just like I do, just like everyone else does. Last week I didn't really make any mistakes, and today I made one and they got me."

Kingery, Newman and Dalbec were the only Arizona players to record multi-hit games on the night. Riley Moore stranded three baserunners on a pair of groundouts to second base in the third and seventh innings. JJ Matijevic stranded two of his own in the fifth.

The Wildcats are back at it next weekend at Pac-12 leading UCLA. The loss drops them to 28-19 overall, 10-12 in conference play.
