Arizona Stadium, Tucson to host bowl game

Get pumped for the Arizona Bowl

It's been over 15 years since the City of Tucson and Arizona Stadium have hosted a college football bowl game, but that's all about to change in 2015.

It was announced that Tucson was approved to host what is tentatively called the "Arizona Bowl" on December 29th, 2015. The game will pit teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA against each other.

The Daily Star reports that the bowl committee, led by Sabino grad Ali Farhang, is looking to strike a deal with a TV network and a title sponsor on a five-year deal. That TV Network will likely be CBS Sports Network.

The last bowl game to be played in Tucson was the 1999 Insight Bowl, when Colorado beat Boston College 62-28. The Arizona Wildcats played in the first installation of the game, originally known as the Copper Bowl in 1989, when they defeated North Carolina State 17-10. UA also defeated New Mexico 20-14 in the 1997 version.

In 2000, the Insight Bowl moved to what is now Chase Field. In 2006, it moved to Sun Devil Stadium. Now known as the Cactus Bowl, it will move back to Chase Field in 2015 due to renovations happening at SDS. It is still contracted to be a Pac-12/BIg 12 showdown.

There are now 42 bowl games, which means 82 of the 128 FBS teams will compete in bowl games in 2015, which is ridiculous.

The real question is this: how many people will go to a meaningless football game between the Mountain West and Conference USA in Tucson? Will you go if you are in Tucson without anything else to do on December 29th?
