Power 5 commissioners hold ‘emergency meeting’ to discuss cancelling football, fall sports

If true, this isn’t a good sign we’ll be having college sports this fall.

ESPN is reporting that commissioners from the five power conferences—ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC—held an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss whether football and other fall sports can be played amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The report noted that sources indicate the Big Ten is leaning towards pulling the plug, with a majority of conference presidents read to “vote to postpone football season, hopefully to the spring.” The meeting was reportedly to gauge if other leagues would follow suit.

Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated added to the speculation, tweeting that attempts to salvage the 2020 season are “all but over:”

However, this comes not long after 247Sports reported that the SEC has no plans to cancel anything, with a source telling the site ‘that’s the reason we moved the start of the (football) season.”

As of now, all five power conferences have adjusted their 2020 football schedules to eliminate or vastly reduce non-conference games, while at the Group of 5 level the Mid-American Conference announced Saturday it was moving football to the spring. Several FCS leagues have done the same.
