The state of California released a set guidelines on Friday for college athletes to resume, a blueprint that may make it easier for the Pac-12 to hold sports this fall.

First reported by Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, the guidelines include things teams must do before they can return to practice and before they can resume competition.

Among the practice guidelines issued by California is a recommendation to test “at least 25 percent” of a team and its staff each week. When it comes to being permitted to play games, the state says testing and results have to be conducted and received within a 72-hour window of high-contact risk sports, such as football, while if someone tests positive within 48 hours after a competition that team must inform their opponent.

The guidelines also recommends teams train on-site personnel in contact tracing procedures to help determine where someone may have contracted COVID-19.

The Pac-12 announced last week that football teams can begin preseason practice as early as Aug. 17—ahead of a scheduled Sept. 26 start to the regular season—while all other fall sports can start practicing on Aug. 15. All Pac-12 teams are set to play conference-only schedules in the fall.
